JOB TITLE: Academic and Career Exploration Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Middle School Program

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Middle School Programs

SUPERVISES: Peer tutors, teen interns and volunteers

Overview: Girls Incorporated of Lynn is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold through direct service and advocacy .

The Middle School Programs, Odyssey and Eureka are designed to meet the developmental needs of girls ages 12-14. It complements our School-Age Child Care Program and is an important precursor to our Teen Program. The overall goal of the Middle School Programs is to empower middle school girls with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to make healthy decisions; achieve academic success; and develop positive relationships with adults and peers. Odyssey is the program for girls in grades 6 – 8 and runs from October through June. Eureka is an intensive full-day, six-week summer STEM programs that take place in July and August.

Girls Inc. of Lynn seeks as part time academic and career exploration coordinator to provide girls in grades sixth through ten with daily academic support and opportunities to explore and prepare for future careers.

STATUS: Part time, non-exempt

SCHEDULE: 29 hours per week, 1:30-6:30 Monday-Thursday and 1:00-6:00 Friday

PAY RATE: $20.00 per hour

RESPONSIBILITIES:

School Year:

• Oversee the daily academic support activities;
• Collect and track report cards and progress reports from members;
• Design and carry out an incentive and recognition program for participants;
• Design and implement alternative academic activities for participants who finish their homework early or have no homework;
• Supervise participant’s activities during academic time;
• Recruit, train and supervise a team of 6 high school peer tutors;
• Conduct individual check-in with girls to assess their academic needs;
• Contact parent/guardians regarding the girls’ academics as need;

• Plan and deliver structured enrichment programs as requested;
• Assist with other components of the programs as assigned.

Summer:

• Orient, train, place and supervise a group of 14-30 young women in summer internships.
• Identify, orient, and support summer internship host sites located at Lynn community businesses and social services organizations
• Coordinate colleges visits and positive risks taking activities i.e., ropes course, rock climbing
• Plan, deliver and evaluate the academic and career exploration class during the

Eureka summer program for rising ninth grade participants

_General Responsibilities *

• Plan, deliver and evaluate hands-on, minds-on enrichment programs
• Prepare written program plans before the fall, winter and spring programming sessions
• Document all activities and complete a final report by the given due date at the conclusion of fall, winter and spring program sessions
• Always supervise participants’ behavior and activities, including members’ use of the computers
• Uphold and enforce program rules
• Assist with the administration and operation of the middle school programs as needed
• Organize and maintain program space, supplies, equipment, and materials
• Work collaboratively with Girls Inc. staff to provide a safe, secure, pro-girl environment and intentional programming
• Keep supervisor informed of problems, concerns, needs, trends, and unusual activities
• Assist with special events and field trips as requested
• Carry out other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience with youth, preferably girls, from underserved backgrounds
• Experience planning, facilitating and evaluating youth programming
• High Level of cultural awareness with experience working with youth representing diverse cultures, ethnicities, languages and abilities.
• Understanding of gender issues affecting girls and young women and a commitment to girls-centered programs
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to adapt between a youth friendly demeanor and a highly professional demeanor
• Experience with report writing
• Bilingual: Spanish/English is a plus
• Technologically Proficient
