Job Description:
Girls Inc. of New York City seeks an Education Specialist for our comprehensive programs. The Education Specialist is responsible for identifying suitable curricula through a trauma-informed, social emotional lens, helping staff create activity plans, supporting curriculum development and training, overseeing implementation of program activities, fostering continuous quality improvement and building productive relationships with the school attended by program participants. Duties include:

• Help staff modify existing curriculum and create new program curriculum or set of sequenced activity plans that map a path to achievement of specific learning goals or acquisition of specific skills that reflect relevant learning standards.
• Coach program staff on strategies that foster social and emotional skills development and how to infuse program activities with reading, writing, and math to strengthen and offer opportunities to practice basic literacy and math skills as well as develop problem-solving, stress management, teamwork, and critical thinking skills.
• Keep the Program Directors informed of problems, concerns, needs, trends and unusual activities.
• Work with the host school’s Administration and Grade Team Leaders to fully understand academic activities during the school day and help Activity Specialists align instruction to enhance school-day learning.
• Identify areas for ongoing professional development to foster continuous quality improvement.
• Perform other duties as requested and agreed upon.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership

• Act as a role model for program participants and staff
• Demonstrate leadership to assure good conduct, safety and development of program participants
• Foster a culture of excellence in program service delivery

Program Development and Implementation

• Prepare and deliver high-quality, interactive programming for middle and high school girls, creating lesson plans that are culturally relevant for a diverse student population
• Create a safe space for girls to explore their values, identities, and academic and career options
• Be a role model/mentor to girls, promoting their well-being, development, confidence, and success; motivate and inspire girls to be active participants in program activities, encouraging their long-term involvement
• Oversee day-to-day program activities in accordance with established standards and goals
• Ensure that girls are encouraged to participate in a variety of GINYC clubs, activities and events
• Record and maintain program, attendance, outcome, and evaluation data
• Encourage the development of positive peer relationships among program participants
• Support in the development and facilitation of GINYC trainings
• Provide trainings and support surrounding social-emotional learning and trauma informed practices within youth development spaces

Resource Management

• Ensure compliance with GINYC policies and procedures
• Manage program and educational resources
• Ensure productive work environment in delivery of all programs
• Support Site Director to ensure proper record keeping and reporting for all programs
• Support Site Director to ensure compliance with all reporting requirements for DYCD and GINYC
• Monitor and support participants through risk management; appropriately reports concerns about issues of child safety regulations
• Provide space for consultations regarding social-emotional guidance and support, with access to additional mental health resources and referrals when needed

Training and Facilitation

• Assist with the launch of GINYC Mind Body Matters & G3 Training Institutes
• Serve as GINYC lead trainer and content expert for Mind Body Matters program and support ongoing training of Program Specialist throughout the year
• Provide administrative and project support for Mind Body Matters program

Additional Responsibilities

• Ensure a team-based work environment by communicating effectively and positively with supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, and other stakeholders

• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Possession of a valid New York State teaching credential, administrative credential desirable; successful teaching experience at middle school level, experience in developing curriculum and providing staff development activities.
• Knowledge in 6-8 curriculum and various effective professional development programs; ability to effectively communicate knowledge and skills to other staff.
• Possess skills to manage the work, set priorities, and evaluate progress toward outcomes.
• Position requires flexibility, creativity, organization, energy and passion for inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold.
• A self-starter with the ability to work as a team player and foster cooperative work.
• Background in partnering with schools, experiential learning and group facilitation with youth is a must.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and relationship build with youth, parents, community leaders, and co-workers.
• Experience facilitating experiential learning programs in one or more of our Girls Inc. areas of focus.
• Effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills that follow youth development principles.
• Experience working in single-sex, gender equity programs is preferred.
• Keen understanding of the social and emotional learning needs of the target population.
• Reliable, timely, ability to receive and provide feedback in a constructive way.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the following competencies through a combination of previous education/work experiences:

• Ability to design and adapt curriculum to engage middle and high school girls in a fun, interactive, and empowering learning environment

• Ability to organize effectively (track tasks and work to deadlines)
• Prioritize appropriately and act in keeping with priorities
• Able to identify and address inhibitors to progress
• Expertise with office technologies, especially Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and internet resources such as google docs

Communication Skills

• Motivating and inspirational verbal presentation style
• Ability to encourage genuine and respectful communications among program participants
• Excellent verbal and written skills, as seen in communications with students, parents, partners

HOURS: The Education Specialist is a full time position. Must be available to work Monday through Friday from 10:00am – 6:00pm.
