High School College and Career Counselor and Afterschool Program Coordinator

Fugees Family Inc. is a non-profit organization that operates Georgia Fugees Academy Charter School,an independent, tuition-free middle and high school for refugee students. Fugees Academies are the first schools in the United States dedicated to refugee education. The core design principles of the school include an extended school day, a low teacher-student-ratio, interactive instruction, a comprehensive tutoring program, a soccer-focused athletic program, and intensive wrap-around support services for students and their families.

Georgia Fugees Academy Charter School (GFACS)

• GFACS serves approximately 60 high school students.

• GFACS model combines soccer with rigorous academic standards and wraparound services to help meet the needs of refugee children and their families

• GFACS needs teachers and staff who are innovative, passionate, and able to take feedback, and willing to reflect, assess and alter their teaching to best meet the needs of our students.

Job Description

GFACS is seeking a qualified College and Career Counselor to support and educate high school students through a well-prepared career and college-counseling program. The Counselor/Coordinator will support the goal of every student graduating from high school college and career ready. The College and Career Counselor will also serve as the facilitator for the attaining of students’ academic or career goals and progress. This is a full-time, ten-month position.

Key Responsibilities

• Career and College Counseling

• Lead college and career classes for students from 9th-12th grade
• Lead and follow through with the college and/or vocational career application process for our students in the 12th grade
• Coordinate college visits and other impactful resources for the students

• Work with students to achieve their academic goals and ensure behavior expectations are met

• Program Monitoring and Evaluation

• Maintain records for program evaluation purposes
• Work closely with the School Leaders to ensure that programming is run efficiently

Education and Experience

• Minimum of 2 years of full-time career and college counseling experience and/or teaching high school students, preferably with students from low-income backgrounds and/or with students from a range of different ethnic and faith backgrounds in a classroom setting

• Ability to evaluate instructional programs and practices and develop short and long-term plans

• Working knowledge of college and career readiness and preparation

• Experience guiding first-generation college students through post-graduation goals

• Up-to-date knowledge of academic and athletic scholarships

• Ability to build relationships with local businesses, post-secondary partners, apprenticeship councils, community-based organizations, students, teachers and parents to increase post-secondary student-success

• A strong sense of personal accountability for student achievement

• The ability to communicate effectively with students and families of different backgrounds

• The ability to work effectively with colleagues as a positive, professional member of a team

• Outstanding youth development skills, including the ability to motivate and challenge students

• Demonstrated ability to create and maintain a warm, strict, orderly program environment including enforcing behavior expectations with students

• Committed, and a team player capable of working with minimum supervision

• BA required. MA preferred

• Citizenship, residency or work VISA in the United States required
