GM Defense is actively engaged in the pursuit of Government program opportunities! The Software & Controls Engineer reports to the GM Defense Engineering Group Manager (EGM) for the Electrical Systems, Controls and Software Engineering team. The selected candidate will be responsible for the integration of electrical systems, software and controls in a fast-paced environment on government programs as well as special projects. This position requires a combination of technical theory and hands-on skills with the confidence and ability to be self-directed in a small team environment.

Individuals are expected to operate with a high level of independent judgment and are typically responsible for implementing functional strategy, administering and coordinating programs, counseling and advising management.

A fully qualified individual contributor will provide expert judgment and analysis for the design, development and implementation of technical products and systems. Resolves highly sophisticated technical issues and recommends alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures. Come and join our team!

Key Responsibilities:

• Design complex vehicle controls using MATLAB & Simulink tools.
• Work collaboratively with CSIE to implement control algorithms for chassis, brake and thermal controls into existing or new supervisory controls.
• Utilize partnerships in application of military C5ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) communication and power supply protocols to integrate military system modules to GMD vehicles.
• Describe and report on algorithm design choices and function when required.
• Support calibration of controls for maximum performance.
• Coordinate activities requiring use of production resources, including GECSE (Global Electrification, Controls, Software & Electronics) and Electrical Components engineering teams with consistency of design solutions.
• Work with Lead Technical Specialist/Feature Owner to define requirements to be included in engineering SOR’s (Statement of Requirements) and P-Spec/VTS’s (Vehicle Technical Specifications)
• Develop Electrical Integration solutions to meet vehicle requirements and ensure high quality, on-time completion of Electrical-related P-spec Elements per Program Timing.
• Support establishment of a development and validation plan with GMD LDE and PVE as needed.
• Support builds of properties to test as needed.
• Work to achieve compliance and balance between GM Best Practices and P-Spec
• Participate in electrical design/peer reviews
• Participate in and present updates to VAPIR and VPIT as needed
• Stay abreast of the latest simulation and controls methods.

Additional Job Description

Basic Qualifications:

• BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
• Electrical design experience
• 2+ years’ experience in Matlab, dSPACE, ControlDesk and Simulink algorithm development
• 2+ years of experience in xIL systems (SIL, HIL, MIL, DIL, etc…)
• Must be familiar with GM data logging file formats
• Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle
• This position requires either a U.S. Person (as defined in applicable export regulations) or a non-U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain required export authorization(s)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Engineering discipline
• Familiarity with GM Vehicle Controls and Calibration (ECM / TCM / EBCM)
• Experience in CAD Systems
• GM Level 2 Driving Certification
• EcoCAR or Formula SAE/Electric experience
• Vehicle development experience
• Vehicle build experience
• Familiarity with manufacturing processes, including low volume
• GM DFSS Black Belt Certification, or in process
