Seeking a winter caretaker for GCI Communication’s corporate retreat located in Wood Tikchik State Park, near Dillingham Alaska. GCI is the largest telecommunications provider in Alaska. It operates a corporate teambuilding retreat during the summer months of May-October. In October the Retreat is shut down, summer employees depart, and a caretaker remains onsite for the duration of the Alaska winter (October to end of April).
Caretaker will live onsite at this remote facility to insure the safety and security of the property and its buildings. In addition to being a constant presence and providing regular check-in updates to the Retreat Manager, the caretaker will insure a storage building remains above freezing temperatures for the entire term, perform regular snow removal, harvest standing dead trees for firewood, and perform occasional maintenance of buildings in the event of damage caused by weather or other unforeseen events.
This is a remote location 20 miles from the nearest road and 40 miles from the nearest town. The caretaker lives in a cabin heated by wood stove and a propane space heater. Limited power is provided by solar panels, wind turbines, batteries and a small 2000watt gas generator. Water must be hauled by hand from a river located 30ft from the cabin. Toilet facilities are limited to an outdoor outhouse. Temperatures can reach -20 to -30 degrees at times, though they average 20 degrees for most of the winter
Phone and internet is available via satellite connection.
All food is provided by the company and stored in freezers maintained by the caretaker.
Candidates must be willing and able to tolerate the challenges of isolation and solitude and limited daylight, must be sober, and be physically capable of withstanding very cold temperatures. Also must be able to lift heavy loads, operate a small generator and perform periodic oil changes, operate a chainsaw, and preferably be able to operate a snowmobile and ATV.
Fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and wildlife viewing opportunities are endless for the right candidate. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.
End of term bonus equal to 1 month pay for successful completion of term.
