DE&S and SDA are an integral part of UK Defence, delivering some of the most technically complex programmes across air, sea, land and strategic enablers. In this area of expertise, we plan and deliver the tools, parts and check-ups that keep vehicles like tanks and fighter jets well-maintained, from their first launch to the day they’re retired from service. Specifically supporting ILSE you can help shape the design, development, and implementation of innovative support solutions for cutting-edge technology used by the UK Armed Forces.

As an ILS Engineer, you’ll be working on high-profile acquisition projects and playing a key part in providing support solutions for frontline users and maintainers. You may have already worked in Defence, or perhaps your experience lies in the Engineering, Transportation or Automotive industry. No matter what your background, if you have the skills in project support, support engineering, or equipment maintenance, we want to hear from you. Likewise, individuals who can logically understand and identify the maintenance factors in supporting equipment when deployed on military training and operations are equally suited to these roles.

This opportunity will give you direct influence in how our Armed Forces manage, operate, maintain, diagnose, repair and sustain equipment capability, at affordable through life cost. You will also be providing support to the project ILS lead in planning the acquisition of supportable defence equipment and products for our customers. This involves the ability to understand and interpret our military customers’ requirements into realistic, achievable, and cost-effective contractual requirements. This role is key in coordinating the delivery of reliable and maintainable equipment, which will have effective end-to-end through life support solutions for our UK Armed Forces.

Responsibilities for DE&S / SDA Integrated Logistics Support Engineer

Your main responsibilities will be:

• Assist the military customer in determining user requirements, which can be mapped to contractual system requirements to sustain cost-effective equipment support
• Assist in the definition and development of the Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) Plan, support strategy and associated ILS element documentation, plans and reports
• Consult with colleagues and stakeholders to coordinate support progress design reviews in developing support and training solutions
• Provide future intelligence to avoid unplanned cost expenditure occurring through having robust obsolescence and disposal strategies in place prior to entry into service, by working with Industry and support stakeholders
• Assist in the monitoring of the Supplier ILS programme performance, including supporting trials, evaluations and logistic support demonstrations
• Assist in the governance of the ILS programme providing input into the supportability case and support updates on the recommended investments in tools, test equipment, software, technical documentation, publications, spares, transportation, facilities, infrastructure and warehousing

What you will be assessed against

To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

• The ability and knowledge to interpret technical information within contractual arrangements
• Able to problem solve and analyse multiple sources of data to make improvements
• Able to communicate effectively to influence decision making
• The ability to manage suppliers by having knowledge or understanding of the factors that are needed to sustain equipment/products. This includes suggesting actions that help maintain the integrity of the customer service

It will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• An understanding of systems engineering promoting change to improve reliability and maintainability of equipment
• Experience and/or understanding on how to apply the ILS principles in a project, such as consideration of how the equipment’s facilities, services, tools, spares and human factors affect equipment operational availability at affordable cost

About your team

The Integrated Logistics (iLog) Function is the integrating Function for Support within DE&S, responsible for the development, management and delivery of in-service support for our front-line command customers. The iLog Function consists of around 2,900 personnel, both civil servants and military, and with a wide range of disciplines ranging from operations management and supply chain management, technical through-life support and logistics delivery, to modelling and analysis.
