Job description
Within the Air Environment we are responsible for the safety of all Air Platforms and equipment; from our Fast Jets such as the F35 Lightning, Typhoon and Hawk, to our rotary wing Helicopters, including Apache, Chinook, Merlin and Wildcat and our Transporter and ISTAR platforms such as Voyager, E7 and A400M. Each of these delivery teams requires a professional engineer with a strong aviation background to lead the specific safety activities in support of the Chief Engineer Type Airworthiness Authority (TAA).
As a Level 4 Safety Professional, you will be entrusted to provide Acquisition Safety leadership within your area. Entry to the business at this level (L4 – Expert) is not the norm and we currently have one such position available to the right candidate.
Location will depend on the platform team you are assigned to, but DE&S operate hybrid working and your Permanent Duty Station can be aligned at the following locations:
MOD Abbey Wood, Filton, Bristol, BS34 8JH
RAF Brize Norton, Carterton, Oxfordshire, OX18 3LX
RAF Waddington, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, LN5 9NB
Wattisham Flying Station, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7RE
Responsibilities
As the team’s Safety Lead, you will be required to balance technical oversight and strategy development with the need to delegate and empower your team. Responsibilities of these posts vary and will include, but not be limited to:
* Accountability and responsibility for the Acquisition Safety guidance within a Delivery Team or as Deputy within an Operating Centre HQ.
* Conducting reviews, audits and inspections to ensure that the platform (and or equipment) maintains compliance against applicable UK and EU legislation, directives and regulations, and MOD regulations where they differ or are specific to Air.
* Development and maintenance of policy and process to satisfy the DE&S or Air standards for Acquisition Safety Management. Management of DE&S or Air improvement plans for Acquisition Safety implementation.
* Undertake assessments and critiques of Safety work, as a team member or independently. Ensuring that technical solutions for managing or controlling Safety risk deliver and maintain the technical performance of the project.
* You may hold formal Safety Delegations (e.g. Safety Responsible LOAA) in some teams.
What you will be assessed against
To be successful with your application you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:
* Extensive experience in the use of systems safety and processes in aviation, or in a similar high-hazard or regulated environment.
* Possess a thorough understanding of engineering or operations in the fields of Civil Aviation or UK Military Aviation. An excellent level of stakeholder management and communication skills, able to act as the independent Subject Matter Expert to challenge delivery teams and industry partners on best practice, acceptable and proportionate means of compliance, continuous improvement and risk analysis and mitigation techniques.
* Minimum of a Level 6 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent knowledge in an engineering environment.
*Chartered Engineer, or evidence of working at that level with the ability and willingness to attain within 6 months.
It will also benefit your application if you are able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
* Experience of developing safety arguments in support of safety assessments or safety cases.
* Formal System Safety courses (please provide details).
