SUMMARY:

The Director of Science Education will direct the operations of all educational programs at the museum from conception through execution and will work under the supervision of the Vice President of Science Education. These programs include, but are not limited to: camp programs, field trip experiences, onsite facilitation, programming for youth with special needs, early childhood programs, educational internships, community outreach, evening educational programs, and special learning opportunities coordinated with special events. The Director of Science Education will supervise a team of educators.

ESSENTIAL Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lead the operations of all educational programs at the museum and within the community.
• Work with the Vice President of Science Education to develop and directly implement new models of innovative programming serving diverse audiences and utilizing unique technologies and varied learning modalities.
• Work with the Vice President of Science Education to prepare annual budgets for the education department, as well as budgets for externally sponsored programs.
• Monitor spending for educational programs in accordance with established operational and grant budgets.
• Work towards defined revenue and impact goals for outreach, field trips, and other educational programs.
• Support and/or lead educational programming aligned with external grant funding.
• Provide direct staff management including performance assessment, scheduling, and mentorship.
• Work closely with other museum departments to design and implement staffing models to support museum operations generally.
• Work with the Vice President of Science Education to track benchmarks, numbers served, and program outcomes to account to external funders of sponsored programs.
• Collaborate with external partners as necessary to support program implementation.
• Adhere to the established policies and procedures of the museum.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in education or a science, engineering, or technology discipline. Master’s or Doctorate degree is strongly preferred.
• At least four (4) years of experience in educational program development and execution at a museum, zoo, aquarium, or similar informal learning environment with a portion of that work in a supervisory role.
• Experience in sales and marketing programs and products a plus.
• Experience with new program development and familiarity with best practices of informal education in museums, zoos, and aquariums.
• Experience working with children, youth and families of diverse backgrounds and income levels.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to manage multiple staff, including schedules, performance assessments, and trainings.
• Ability to develop educational programs with emphasis on learning through active, inquiry-based exploration.
• Ability to think strategically and execute plans to meet revenue and impact goals.
• Comfort working within unfamiliar environments and the ability to connect and build new relationships with stakeholders.
• Ability to present oneself as an ambassador for Frost Science.
• Ability to adhere to and manage budgets, including generation, adherence, and reporting.
• Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously.
• Ability to work both collaboratively across departments as well as independently to achieve programmatic benchmarks.
• Comfort with design and implementation of new modes of engagement, new technologies, and unique programming models.
• Experience and proficiency in verbal and written communication, to effectively share information from multiple disciplines to diverse audiences, with various backgrounds.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) experience is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The characteristics of the work environment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work time will be split between working in an open office setting and on the museum, floor executing and observing programs. Some activities may be outside. In addition, weekend and evening work supporting educational programming is sometimes required.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Level 2 background clearance as defined by Florida statues/law.
• Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $65,000.00 per year
