FlexSchool is a fun and challenging learning community for the neuro-diverse. From our founder to our youngest student, we learn from each other and the world every day. Our students are gifted and/or twice-exceptional, meaning they process information differently. The standard school model often doesn’t work well for them. FlexSchool removes the roadblocks to learning and offers individualized support so our students can succeed.
We love people who live outside the box and think that quirky is beautiful. Much like our students find their tribe when attending FlexSchool, our employees often feel the same. Our staff are open, collaborative, bright, funny, and warm. A common statement made by our teachers is, ”I was this kid when I was in school and I wish FlexSchool had existed then!”
The School Counselor will:
Help to create and maintain a culture of respect, challenge, support, and care for all FlexSchool students.
Provide ongoing support to students throughout the day through classroom push-in and as-needed crisis management.
Maintain an open “virtual support room” for students to come to as needed throughout the day for emotional regulation and problem-solving.
Provide IEP mandated individual counseling as needed.
Prepare necessary paperwork for PLAAFPs, IEP meetings, ADHD/ASD teacher reports, college recommendations, among others and attend IEP meetings as needed.
Run weekly social pragmatic groups or coping skill development groups for students (including seminar).
Plan and lead regular parent workshops and support groups.
Participate in weekly Town Hall meetings.
Collaborate with network counselors to plan and deliver our Social Thinking program.
Run small group counseling sessions.
Teach weekly and daily health classes using a social-emotional lens as needed.
Collaborate with the Learning Specialist to write and consistently update student learning profiles based on prior evaluations.
Attend and participate in student articulation meetings, regular faculty meetings, and sometimes lead staff professional development.
Meet with teachers as needed to discuss executive functioning and classroom management strategies.
Communicate with parents about progress, concerns, and triumphs, and maintain frequent communication with outside service providers to ensure that student needs are being met.
Report all significant student concerns to the Head of School and collaborate on an action plan when appropriate.
Supervise interns if applicable.
Other duties as requested by the Head of School.
