As a drone company focused on software challenges we are insulated from most of the issues produced by COVID, and have rapidly grown during the UK lockdown period. We have funding on several UK Government projects and equity investment from leading Venture Capitalists and Angel investors.

Flare Bright will soon open an office in Oxford City Centre along with our current facility based in Westcott Venture Park, very close to Oxford, Bicester, Aylesbury and Thame sandwiched between the M1 and M40. Westcott Venture Park is a 650-acre business park, which has a vibrant community of over 80 companies in the tech, aerospace and space sectors.

The role:

Working closely with everyone from apprentices to our CEO and CTO, you will be responsible for a wide variety of software engineering, including machine learning, digital twins and embedded software in the complete operation of autonomous drones, from logistics, drone setup and testing, mission configuration, launch, asset monitoring, capture, data download, analysis, and data sharing. The work includes software engineering work on C++ on linux for machine learning, digital twins, which operate on with a range of drone assets, along with some UI work as required.

Skills & Experience

• 2.1 or higher Degree in Software Engineering or a related discipline which included programming.

• At least 5 years professional experience of relevant software development to a high standard.

• You must have a strong grasp of C++, real-time systems, object oriented programming, formal design methods and test-driven development.

• Able to write well-structured, efficient, documented and tested software to high quality standards following coding conventions.

• In depth knowledge of software engineering best practices including design, change control, coding standards, documentation, code review, source control management, build processes, releases and testing.

• Familiarity developing to meet standards such as DO178, DO254 or related aerospace requirements would be a plus

• Additional knowledge of python/bash scripting, HTML5/JavaScript UI development, or Android mobile app development is an advantage.

• Experience leading and mentoring a team of developers would be an advantage.

• You must be willing to work as part of a team with good interpersonal skills.

• We will consider bright, enthusiastic applicants ranging from experienced Engineers looking for a more senior role, to existing Senior Engineers.

A practical and theoretical knowledge test is part of the interview where understanding of C++ software systems will be checked.

Flexible & remote working is available but you will need to regularly visit our offices and workshop in Westcott Venture Park where the equipment and team is located.

We work in defence as well as commercial and ‘blue light’ sectors, so you must be comfortable working within the defence industry, and be eligible to work in the UK. We have a preference for those who will be able to work on sensitive defence projects due to nationality (typically UK, NATO or Five Eyes). Due to the security classification on the work we do, we will undertake a routine Baseline Personnel Security Standard check on the successful applicant. This is a standard process which includes references and career history checks.
