Job description:

First Quantum Minerals is one of the world’s biggest mining companies, employing over 20,000 people.

Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation is our flagship operation in Australia. Located on the beautiful south coast of Western Australia, we’re just 20 minutes from the coastal community of Hopetoun. As a major nickel producer and exporter, we aim to ship up to 30,000 tonnes of nickel concentrate each year via Esperance Port.

Reporting to the Finance Superintendent, the Senior Mine Accountant is responsible for preparation, analysis and reporting of key financial data. This role requires a thorough understanding of mine site accounting and a drive to understand the operational specifics of RNO. This involves working closely with all members of the management team to assist them in better understanding their costs and cost drivers and assist them in the identification of cost reduction opportunities. The role has two direct reports and you will be responsible for guiding their work and advancing their industry knowledge.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Degree qualifications in Accounting.
  • Membership of a professional accounting body (ICAA/CPA).
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years relevant mining financial experience.
  • High-level communication and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated high level analytical skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • High degree of computer literacy and strong Excel skills.
  • Experience with Pronto and Hyperion (HFM) and Power BI software will be highly regarded, but is not essential.
  • Experience with financial modeling in the mining industry will be highly regarded.
  • Commitment to safe work practices.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Preparation of monthly management accounts including:
  • Inventory valuation including stockpiles, finished goods, and WIP.
  • Maintenance of deferred stripping model.
  • Accruals, journals and reconciliation of production physicals.
  • Reporting deliverables to Corporate Finance
  • Preparation of variance analysis and commentary.
  • Calculation of KPIs and benchmarking.
  • Preparation and presentation of monthly cost reports to Senior Management.
  • Develop strong relationships with stakeholders to identify and implement cost reduction opportunities.
  • Regular interactions with operational personnel to build understanding of the operating specifics of RNO.
  • Ownership and continuous improvement of management reporting processes.
  • Preparation of annual budgets and rolling forecasts including on-going liaison with all heads of departments and ensuring that the budget and forecasts are prepared in compliance with company guidelines and within corporate deadlines.
  • Supervise, manage and train two direct reports (Cost Accountants).
  • Ensure understanding of, and compliance to, site and statutory safety practices.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the heads of departments and their key personnel on site, and the FQM corporate finance team.
