Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation. The evaluation will be completed by the Building Principal or other approved evaluator.

Terms of Employment: Salary/benefits and most conditions of employment are set by the Board of Education through Board Policy, the FEA contract and this job description. Work year and performance responsibilities are to be established by the Board of Education. Daily schedule, specific tasks, and conditions of employment not otherwise addressed may be assigned by the Building Principal.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated aptitude for the successful completion of tasks in the fulfillment of the assigned responsibilities.
• Experience as a teaching assistant or teacher is helpful but not required.
• Knowledgeable in core academic areas.
• Meet State of Illinois licensure requirements.

Required Clearances

• Certificate of good health signed by a licensed physician.
• State of Illinois fingerprinting and background check in compliance with state code and district policy requirements. (A fingerprint-based criminal history records check and a check of the Statewide Sex Offender Database and Violent Offender Against Youth Database (when available) will be performed on the successful candidate as required by State law. Each newly hired employee must complete an Immigration and Naturalization Service Form as required by federal law. The District retains the right to discharge any employee whose criminal background investigation reveals a conviction for committing or attempting to commit any of the offenses outlined in Section 5/21-23a of The School Code or who falsifies, or omits facts from, his or her employment application or other employment documents.)

Required Skills

Brief Description Of Position

• Work under the supervision of a classroom classroom teacher(s).
• Work closely with one or more students with disabilities on a regular basis.
• Provide academic, emotional, and physical help for students with disabilities in order to allow students to gain full benefits of the school academic program.

Performance Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the special education teacher, aides, guides, and helps students with disabilities in curriculum tasks.
• Under the direction of the classroom teacher, works with small groups or individual students with disabilities to reinforce material initially introduced by the classroom teacher.
• Under the direction of the classroom teacher, reinforces instruction of small groups or individuals with disabilities in all academic areas.
• Under the direction of the special education teacher, performs non-instructional tasks as directed in student IEPs as needed/requested.
• Under the supervision of the classroom teacher, performs simple errands and tasks for the student(s) as needed.
• Reinforces good behaviors, respect, and higher level thinking skills.
• Assists classroom teacher in maintaining a classroom management policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for students and staff in order to promote optimum learning conditions.
• Assists classroom teacher during curriculum-related activities
• Assists student with disabilities in moving safely and properly from one learning environment to another, as requested.
• ?Is courteous and polite with students, staff and co-workers, and the general public.
• Maintains student records and completes required s directly related to duties as a special education teaching assistant.
• Communicates regularly with teacher(s) in regard to student progress.
• Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner.
• Maintains and respects confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
• s repairs needed and safety concerns promptly to the Building Principal.
• Arrives punctually. Remains on the school premises during school hours when scheduled to work. Remains on school grounds when requested by either the Building Principal.
• Assists visitors and building groups as needed. Is courteous and polite with students, staff and co-workers, and the general public.
• Completes and submits accurate time sheets in a timely manner.
• Checks email and other communications daily; responds to email as necessary.
• Dresses appropriately. Is a positive role model for students.
• Is available for off-schedule work as requested by the Building Principal.
• Follows all rules, regulations, policies, etc., pertaining to the completion of all facets of the position. Follows established safety procedures at all times.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by the special education teacher or the Building Principal.
