This role is part of our Core Development team. It requires the team member to be a self-starter and to be able to figure things out. Stack Overflow is your friend. We are more interested in what you’ve learned over the years than your educational background.

This role requires a big picture thinker. Someone who can see systems as a whole and how they work together. It requires someone with an understanding of designing systems. It also requires someone that can go heads down into coding to put in place their designs. You will use your troubleshooting abilities to work with our system maintenance staff. You have the opportunity to make recommendations on our systems and to keep our legacy systems humming.

We are embarking on a project to modernize our systems and you will play a key part. We intend to replace our legacy systems with a new modern architecture. You will be working with stakeholders, developing requirements, and flushing out project plans. You will be analyzing legacy systems written in Perl, PHP, and Bash scripts and using Python, Docker, and modern libraries to replace these systems. You will be developing code for back end and front end systems and using devops strategies to deploy and maintain the new code. You should be as comfortable working with Visual Studio Code as working with ssh and vi on a remote machine.

Ways you contribute:

• Collaboratively work alongside others to deliver value back to the organization
• Work alongside stakeholders to develop requirements and flush out project plans
• Analyze legacy systems and provide feedback on how to modernize the system
• Work on projects and change requests by developing new code and updating existing code as part of our modernization process
• Write technical documentation for applications to support installation and maintenance
• Work with system maintenance staff to help rollout new and updated applications into production
• Help shape our team by contributing to our overall goals of continuous improvement

What makes you awesome:

• 8+ years of software development experience
• Experience working in Python, PHP, and Perl with a focus on modern Python 3.x practices
• Experience with Python application frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask
• Experience with SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
• Experience contributing to systems and API design and architecture
• Proven experience developing in a Linux environment to implement systems and services
• Experience migrating from legacy systems
• Experience with of git (Gitlab), building docker containers and development tools such as Visual Studio Code
• Able to pick up new languages and technologies as required – the type of person that knew their way around the computer lab back in high-school
• Excellent problem-solving abilities – type of person that answers “Let me find out” rather than “I don’t know”

• Excellent analytical mindset and big picture thinker that can see the “forest from the trees”
• Experience working with two or more of the following: distributed/parallel systems, enterprise integration, web application development, network software, service-oriented architecture, REST and/or web services
• Must be passionate about software and system architecture, networking, programming, and technology in general
• Strong communicator able to produce clear documentation
• Able to work independently without much supervision

Skills considered an asset:

• Experience with JIRA and Confluence
• Dev-ops pipeline development in Gitlab
• Understanding of Kubernetes and Cloud Services
• Understanding of PHP application frameworks such as Laravel
• Experience with full stack development (front end frameworks such as React and Angular)
• General understanding of Networking, DNS, Firewalls, Syslog/Graylog
