Job Title: Technical Writer/Editor II

Job Summary:

This position is in support of the Naval Research Laboratory’s (NRL) Corporate Communications Office. The NRL Corporate Communications Office requires written content to support an eye-catching and captivating Centennial Celebration video and other related multimedia products to share the success stories about NRL during NRL’s 100th year of operations.

The Writer will produce written and associated graphic materials (such as scripts and social media content) to communicate NRL’s Science & Technology research programs for the centennial celebration.

Responsibilities Include:

• Following AP Style, DoD Style, Navy instructions, and the rules of grammar for all written content
• Writing articles to spotlight past, present, and future NRL research, people, and programs to be used in commemorative Centennial magazine, on NRL social media platforms, NRL Centennial website, and NRL’s internal workforce newsletter
  • Contractor will be required to submit two to four articles (700 to no more than 2500 words) per month to the Corporate Communication Office
• Producing social media posts for the Centennial campaign including creating graphics as needed for NRL Corporate Communication’s social media platforms including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Contractor will be required to submit one to two social media posts per week to the Corporate Communication Office
• Researching potential story topics and getting approval for any non-assigned stories for publication by the Corporate Communication Office
  • Contractor will be required to submit two – ten long form and 20 – 30 short form stories, during the period of performance, to the Corporate Communication Office
• Editing transcripts, provided by the Corporate Communication Office, of the NRL Centennial oral history videos for brevity, AP Style, and grammar
• Drafting press releases and internal articles in accordance with AP and DoD style guides as needed by NRL Corporate Communication
  • Contractor will be required to submit multiple press releases and internal articles as required by the Corporate Communication Office

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree
• At least five (5) years of relevant experience
  • Education may be substituted for experience
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office
• Understanding of AP style and DoD style
• Firm grasp of grammar
• The ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Proven experience creating written content for public distribution

Desired:

• Experience creating written content for public distribution in support of a federal agency

Work Setting and Environment:

• Monday – Friday, normal business hours
• Work is to be performed at NRL’s offices in Washington, DC
• On-site federal contractors, in federal buildings or on federal lands must comply with CDC guidelines with respect to wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and other public health measures
