Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Digital Practice and National Listings, and working as part of the National Digital Practice Team, Digital Practice Officers (DPOs) are responsible for providing support to their local (and any other nominated) registries across the Federal Court and Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. DPOs are focussed on ensuring the judiciary, associates, practitioners and other Court users are well-trained and well-supported through the ongoing adoption of digital practices, and improving the capabilities and knowledge of the Courts’ internal and external stakeholders.

DPOs are responsible for providing high quality, responsive and user-focussed services in their role as the focal point for the judiciary and all others engaging in digital practice. DPO’s promote the use of technology to facilitate litigation.
DPOs are also responsible for seeking out opportunities for improving practice and procedure, leveraging off technology to drive efficiencies and engagement with digital practices, and to support the Courts’ transition to a post-pandemic environment.

Key Duties

  • Provide prompt and professional support, advice and training on digital practices to the judiciary, registrars, staff, the legal profession and other Court users, including the use of hardware, software and Court business applications.
  • Coordinate and conduct local training sessions, including to the judiciary and for on-boarding new associates/court staff, and sharing knowledge and expertise to encourage skill development in relation to digital practices.
  • Promote and develop digital practices in your location and provide a channel for the judiciary, staff, the legal profession and other Court users to raise improvements.
  • Be an expert in the use of new and future Court business applications, including ECF/DCF, Casetrack V1/V2, MS Teams, MS OneNote, MS OneDrive, iPads.
  • Assisting in implementation of change, preparation and development of manuals and user guides for existing and new digital practices, and raising user awareness and engagement.
  • Assisting chambers and courtroom support staff with the practical arrangements of digital litigation (online hearings, video-conferencing equipment and digital hearings/eTrials) such as conducting test calls, liaising with third party providers and proactively monitoring and maintaining records of digital practice issues and opportunities.

Formal Qualifications
While there are no formal qualifications for the role, experience in the application of digital practices and litigation/courtroom procedures in a legal or court environment is highly desirable.

Selection Criteria

  • Well-developed skills to communicate effectively with the judiciary, chambers, staff, legal practitioners, and other external stakeholders including providing reasoning and argument to support change and gain audience support.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Court practices and procedures, and business applications, or the ability to quickly attain this understanding, and the application of digital practice and litigation in a Court environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to confidently promote, build and maintain effective internal and external working relationships including techniques to motivate others and implement change.
  • Demonstrated ability to use specialist knowledge and expertise to address complex problems, to provide oversight and training, and to identify solutions and opportunities in an often
  • time-constrained environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research and analysis, and prepare documentation for others to use to inform decision-making about digital practice and related initiatives.
