Overall responsibilities and duties:

DesignLED is an innovative LED lighting and display technology company, active in the automotive sector. The company invents, designs, develops, prototypes and transfers to production, LED lighting, Display and Human Machine Interface (HMI) products.

Based near Edinburgh in Scotland, our design centre in Livingston supports international automotive customers and their supply chains, with innovative solutions to complex optical, HMI, display and lighting integration challenges.

Overall responsibilities and duties:

The Graduate Software Engineer uses the latest open source software and electronics to create functional, robust prototypes to support the design team in exploring advanced automotive UX and HMI use cases.

Skilled with Arduino, Teensy, RaspberryPi type hardware & software, they are an independent thinker, excited by joining different technologies togeher to create rapid prototype demonstrators, exploring and showcasing interactivity between users and technology.

Furthermore, they will be encouraged to actively engage with HMI trends and the latest breakthroughs in prototyping electronics to ensure we maintain an innovative edge.
The main missions of the role are:

• Create customised code (C#, C++,Python, Java etc) for Ardunio / RaspberryPi type Hardware and Software
• Sketch concepts, source components and build robust, functional interactive prototypes.
• Actively find new technology platforms / demo boards enabling varied and innovative human / electronics interaction.
• Combine various technologies togeher to control LEDs, sensors, switches, PWM, motors etc
• Be aware of and champion adoption the latest prototyping technology to facilitate improved HMI demonstrators
• Develop processes to transfer knowledge and new capabilities into the design team.
• Succinctly and proficiently communicate with our design, development, innovation and prototyping team.

• Delivery of quarterly projects aligned to wider team activities
• Delivery of overall business objectives aligned to Business Plan and Budget
• Internal and external customer satisfaction

Minimum education level:

• College HND in computer science / electronics / programming

Skills & Competencies:

• Practicable experience designing and coding for Arduino / RaspberryPi type electronics
• Can design and build simple circuits, understanding the main Power, Voltage, Current, resistor calculations.
• Has experience with / an understanding of PCB design software and is aware of PCB design guidelines
• Is comfortable explaining technology terminology and coding languages
• Demonstrates a passion for new technology and wants to create interactive, functional prototypes
• Confident communication of design concepts to internal and external stakeholders
• Good knowledge of physical prototyping tools and techniques, creating robust, reliable prototypes.
• Be a self-sufficient independent thinker with a positive attitude
• Ability to work well as part of a small, extremely busy team as well as the ability to be self-motivated and work independently under their own initiative, prioritising workload
• Highly organised, up-beat and efficient
• Some foreign language competence, in European and/or Asian languages, in particular French, German or Mandarin would be useful
