Job Description

Primary Purpose: To be a part of a multi-discipline health team by providing comprehensive Child Welfare services for Thessalon First Nation families. The applicant will develop a strong working relationship with the Family Services Coordinator, Band Representative and external agency frontline workers for the delivery of child welfare services for Thessalon First Nation families.

Key Job Functions

• To provide flexible and diverse services to address family and client needs using a strengths-based holistic approach from a trauma informed, culturally safe perspective.
• Establish a trusting relationship with families and clients who are at risk and/or involved with child welfare agencies.
• To provide advocacy and liaison services to promote and support client’s contact with external agencies.
• Be an integral team member of the Thessalon First Nation Child Welfare Team.
• Engage Thessalon First Nation families in a way that empowers them to move forward in a more holistic lifestyle.
• Attend meetings as required/requested.
• To function as a consultant within the child welfare systems to an individual, family, group, or community.
• Provide intensive support/programming to families (one-on-one).
• Develop service plans with clients on goals and objectives that are concrete, attainable, and relevant to concerns.
• Meet jointly with family and referral source initially to clarify areas of responsibility and working on identifying goals together.
• Promote the use of Customary Care Agreements, Alternative Care, family preservation and reunification for Thessalon First Nation families.
• Assists the Family Services Coordinator by responding to requests for consultation and input into various child welfare issues.
• Ensures that the Family Services Coordinator is adequately briefed on all child welfare cases.
• Participates as appropriate and required in the development and implementation of prevention programs, workshops, forums, etc.
• Willing to take training as required.
• Ensures all electronic client files are up-to-date and accurate.
• Demonstrate ability to interact with Chief and Council and community members.
• Additional duties may be assigned and required

Required Skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must possess a College diploma and/or preferably a University degree in Social/Human Services
• Should possess experience in working with Aboriginal families/or working within Aboriginal communities.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and have possession of a reliable vehicle.
• Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of Child Welfare policies, programs, and services particularly as they relate to First Nations.
• Familiar with computer applications
• Preferred two to three years demonstrated experience within the Child Welfare area.
• Must possess skill in establishing and maintaining relationships with the community leaders, health and social team members and public.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.
• Must be able to provide a clear CPIC and Vulnerable Sector Check
