Senior Geotechnical Designer

My client is a specialist temporary works and refurbishment design consultancy. They operate throughout the UK. This multidisciplinary consultancy works closely with clients to provide a personal service and fully understand their needs in order to achieve a satisfactory project outcome.

They have extensive experience of all areas of temporary works and refurbishment in both the building and civil engineering sectors: cofferdams and deep basements in open cut and top down, façade and party wall supports in busy city centres and towns throughout the country.

Qualifications

Degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology

Experience

Essential

Minimum of 5 years background in Geotechnical
design and/or management of project design

Desirable

Chartered Engineer
MSc in Soil Mechanics
PhD in Soil Mechanics
Experience with both contractor and
consultant

Skills

Design
Essential: Good understanding of routine geotechnical
programs and Microsoft office software
Knowledge of how to comprehend an engineering
drawing.
Good spatial perception.
Understanding of piling construction processes
Ability to specify and interpret site investigation
information and derive appropriate design
parameters

Desirable: Knowledge and use of finite element
analysis tools such as Plaxis or
advanced geotechnical programs
Experience in the use of slope stability
design software
Evidence of completing a complex
design project.
Good presentation skills
Good knowledge of structural design

Analytical
Sound understanding of basic physics and soil
mechanics knowledge.
Evidence of problem solving using engineering
codes & standards

Information Technology
Essential: Ability to drive spreadsheet and word processing
packages.
Ability to use web based databases

Desirable: Knowledge of engineering analysis
packages.
Ability to use Autocad

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Carry out all work so as to take into account own safety and the safety of others
Provide our clients with the best technical solutions
Assist in the specification of all aspects of site investigation works and oversee the chosen contractors work
Closely interpret borehole information and derive the appropriate short term and long term design parameters
Carry out mini pile, small and large diameter bearing pile and retaining wall designs for Geotechnical contractors
Undertake slope stability calculations
Assist and check designs produced by the team
Drawing and detailing using AutoCAD
Downloading data from collaborative web sites
Attend design handover meetings with contractors and communicate all requirements as per the latest CDM regulations
Prepare and present articles and papers on technical issues
Attend technical meetings such as ICE, FPS seminars and conferences
Undertake technical audits on site
Contribute to ideas and actions in order to provide a greater range of geotechnical services.
Together with the Geotechnical Associate/Director, actively engage clients and pursue all avenues for growth of the company geotechnical services.
Act as Lead designer/ Task Team manager/ Interface manager and undertake the associated responsibilities

Salary £40,000 – £50,000 & Package
