General Job Function:
The Espanola Public Schools Native American Education Director will establish and maintain a successful working relationship between EPS, Schools, Administration, Native American Parent Committee (IEC), Pueblo Education Departments, and student families for the benefit of the students. The Director will also work closely with the Deputy Superintendent.
Education/Training Experience:
Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration with emphasis in administration, organization, curriculum development, supervision, leadership and finance. Valid New Mexico Level III Teacher’s License and a valid New Mexico Administrator’s License.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:
Regularly required to walk, talk and listen. Frequently is required to stand and sit. Required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Light lifting at times.
Environmental Conditions:
Frequent travel between schools and offices. The noise level in this position varies. When visiting a building the noise level may be loud; in the office, quiet and at meetings moderate. Heavy telephone contact and meeting schedule. Dealings with people may include individuals who are distraught, angry or hostile.
Essential Job Functions:
All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District. Current essential functions include but are not limited to the following:
Work in a professional, respectful and positive manner with administrative staff, Pueblo officials, parents, and students about home cultures.
The Director of Native American Education is the School District’s employee who represents the Native American Students in enhancing their unique indigenous Pueblo cultures and languages.
The Director Native American Education is tasked to enhance communication and interaction between the home and the schools for the purpose of increasing student academic achievement.
Attend and assist in coordinating IEC monthly meetings.
Make monthly contact with different Pueblo Departments of Education
Organize and facilitate the signing of the Indian Policy and Procedures (IPP).
Assist the Bilingual Office with the completion of PL 874 forms
Ensure that complete 506 Forms for tribal membership are turned in to the EPSD and that copies are kept for backup.
Assist the Superintendent or his designee in the preparation of a budget IEC consultation and review.
Coordinate twice a year meetings between Pueblo Governors and Superintendent.
Assist the Superintendent or his designee in applying for Indian Education Funds.
Prepare purchase requests within the allocation and assigned line items for approval by Superintendent of designee.
Assist with the Title VII and Title VIII Application Process (IEC Signatures, Tribal Governor Signatures for Certification of Parent/Child Eligibility and Student Verification Forms – 506 forms, IPP signatures, etc).
Assist the Superintendent or his designee with the follow-through of Title VII and Title VIII Federal Regulations.
Assist in preparing and submitting the yearly NM Indian Education Status Reports.
Other duties as assigned
Additionally must perform the following:
Local level participation in staff meetings, training and staff development.
Participate and assist in recruitment of home/school parent volunteers.
Notify Counselors/Social Workers if families have issues that require services by a licensed counselor.
Provide parent resource and referral information.
Provide on-going parent-to-parent support as needed.
Develop and coordinate opportunities for parent-to-parent linkages.
Attend workshops pursuant to related duties and responsibilities when available.
