About the Organization: EPACENTER is a creative youth development center in East Palo Alto that amplifies the creative potential in every young person. We harness the power of art, design and technology and culture to accelerate positive youth development outcomes for vulnerable youth in the City. EPACENTER offers free programming along four developmental pathways, including:

• Arts education classes that help students develop their 21st Century skills like creativity, teamwork, and perseverance
• Job training and workforce development programs in creative fields that close gaps in skills and build competencies
• Art production programs where students produce works of high-quality works of art for sale and for public enjoyment
• On-going support throughout their engagement with our programs to help them develop the socio-emotional skills that are needed to thrive.

Our age-differentiated programs are led by professional artists, designers, technicians and expressive art therapists with programs taking place during the school day, after-school and during the summer. Through our programming, we are working towards an inclusive Silicon Valley where anyone can become a creative and innovative leader in any sector, and economic and social success is enjoyed by all.

EPACENTER recently finished constructing a new, LEED Platinum certified, 25,000 square foot youth development facility in East Palo Alto that will open in late 2021. The building includes visual, dance and recording studios, a maker space, digital media labs, music practice rooms, a black box theater and an outdoor amphitheater. When the facility opens, the organization will serve thousands of youth ranging in age from 6-25 every year.

Position Overview: EPACENTER’s mission is to amplify the creative potential of every young person. Achieving this mission is highly dependent on the organization’s arts education programs for youth, which provide foundational to advanced training in art, design and technology. Our arts education programs include in-school and after school classes, private lessons, short-and long-term workshops, and summer instruction that take place at EPACENTER and at public schools and other community organizations.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Skateboard Instructors teach safety, maneuvering, and skateboarding tricks to children and youth, ages 7-18. Instructors also create class syllabi, develop lesson plans, teach assigned classes, manage the classroom, track attendance, and oversee the administration of class evaluations.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching group classes for elementary, middle and high school students

• Assisting the organization with preparation for exhibitions and showcases

• Organizing field trips

• Helping students prepare for and participate in various exhibitions and field trips

• Participating in instructor meetings

Other duties as assigned

Syllabus Development & Instruction

• Provide written syllabi and lesson plans
• Follow health and safety, risk assessment, youth and community development goals,
• Build relationships of mutual trust and respect while working collaboratively with youth participants and families, and fellow artists

Class Administration

• Provide a list of class supplies and equipment

Class Tracking & Evaluation

• Participate in assessment of participant learning

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Qualifications:

• Must have expert knowledge and first-hand experience skateboarding over five years
• Five to ten years of prior professional teaching experience
• Experience in the planning and delivery of high-quality, discipline-specific instruction for youth in community arts programs
• Ability to collaborate and interact in a professional, diplomatic and clear manner with others, including young people, lead instructors, staff, and community partners
• Commitment to ongoing professional development both as an artist and as an arts educator
• Cultural competency and experience working effectively in communities of color
• Ability to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day implementation in a collaborative environment
• Knowledge of youth development best practices and theory
• Passion for the arts with an understanding of how the arts and creativity can transform lives and contribute to community building and placemaking
• Degree in a related field, and/or equivalent experience and education

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with positive youth development strategies
• Bilingual in English and Spanish
• Teaching style that translates well in teaching elementary, middle and high school students

Physical Demands:

• Stand and walk or sit alternatively depending on specific needs of day. Estimate 40% of time is spent on feet and 60% sitting at desk.
• Have occasional need to perform the following physical activities: bending/stooping/squatting, climbing stairs, pushing, pulling, twisting, lifting and reaching above shoulders.
• Have occasional need to perform standing and walking activities.
• Constant need to perform the following physical activities: writing/typing, grasping/turning, finger dexterity.
• Lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds frequently and 50 lbs occasionally.
• Vision requirements: constant need to complete forms, read reports, view computer screen. Frequent need to see small detail. Frequent need to see things clearly beyond arm’s reach.
• Hearing requirements: constant need to communicate over telephone and in person.
