Job Purpose
Reporting to the Power Systems Engineering Manager, the Power Systems Engineering leads, manages, and contributes as an active member of the Power Systems Engineering team capable of carrying out needed engineering initiatives, with emphasis on product development, engineering processes, product design, and sustaining engineering.
A good systems engineer is able to draw from a broad knowledge base and personal experience to take a “holistic” and “concurrent-engineering” approach to product system design. A systems engineer addresses all stakeholder requirements early in the design and is able to anticipate and plan for expected challenges throughout the process. The successful candidate has substantial experience interfacing with customers, sales and marketing, manufacturing, supply chain, quality department and field installation, technical support and problem resolution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Accept market and customer requirements in the forms of Market Requirements Document (MRD) or Customer Requirements Document (CRD), utilize extensive industry experience to assess the MRD/CRD for completeness and work closely with Marketing / Product Management to identify and “fill in” the gaps.
Competently provide appropriate design solutions, complete/correct documentation, and manufacturing and testing support to enable the shipment of products against customer orders.
Resolve technical and process issues; takes ownership of problems and responsibility for solutions.
Augment the MRD/CRD with additional requirements related to regulatory compliance, manufacturing, and safety as needed.
Develop the test development processes including designs, reviews, implementations, and test execution
Ability to derive necessary product test cases and test strategies from MRD/CRD and taking over responsibility for the design and execution of power-system Verification & Validation (V&V) test procedures for Telecommunications/UPS AC/DC power-applications to ensure that V&V testing is focused on meeting the customer and market requirements
Define and use test environment and internal/external automatic testing tools to ensure that product requirements are implemented correctly
Assist engineering teams in failure investigations/ root cause analysis for problems identified during lab testing and field issues
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Cont.
Be involved in test lab management and improvement of test processes
Continuously improving testing methodology, best practices, and standards to provide consistent testing across products
Periodically review how the test strategy aligns with the latest available technologies and industry trends
Perform “gap analyses” of the design versus the technical and test requirements and communicate exceptions proactively to all stakeholders.
Understand and incorporate into designs of components and systems downstream requirements and issues such as manufacturing (fabrication and assembly), procurement, field installation / support / maintenance / upgrade, environmental operating conditions, and eventual end-of-life.
Identify best practices, design and test standards via internal and industry-wide networking, continuous learning, and generally staying abreast of industry trends.
Critical to all duties and responsibilities is the ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and clear thinking by acquiring a thorough knowledge of the Power Systems products that Energy Systems Americas (ESA) offers; demonstrate analytical thinking skills, sound judgment, and bring your own ideas to the table along with a “hands-on” can-do attitude.
Active participation in appropriate Continuous Improvement activities.
Qualifications
MASc in Power Electronics Systems Design with industry experience in designing and testing of power conversion systems incorporating rectifiers, converters, controllers, mechanical shelves and racks.
4 Years experience in commercializing integrated power systems incorporating electronics, mechanical, firmware, and software development, preferably for Telecommunications or UPS markets.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical engineering, or equivalent combination of education and hands-on work experience as a Power Systems Designer or similar role.
Knowledge of AC and DC Power Systems design and applicable codes and standards – telecom product experience is a plus
Good understanding of engineering documentation including schematics, drawings, and BOMs
Excellent organizational skills with good attention to detail
Excellent English communication skill both verbal and written
Creative problem solving/troubleshooting skills
