Emblaze Academy, a new charter middle school located in the South Bronx, invites tenacious educators to apply to the position of Assistant Director of School Culture. The school opened in the fall of 2018 with three classes of 5th graders. Emblaze Academy has added a grade level each year and we are now a fully enrolled 5th – 8th grade middle school. Founding a school is hard work, and we are looking for high capacity, energetic, detail oriented, and fun-loving individuals to join our Team.

Job Description

The Assistant Director of School Culture will play an integral role in creating the foundation and legacy of a joyful culture, school-wide consistency, and predictable structure at Emblaze Academy. The Assistant Director of School Culture position is a full-time position accountable for working directly with the Co- Heads of School and Director of School Culture to uphold a strong school culture and individual student behavior support. The Assistant Director of School Culture will collaborate with the Co- Heads of School to establish discipline systems and support for student behavior, including but not limited to student reflection, detention, and dress code. Working in collaboration with the Director of School Culture and Counselors, the Assistant Director of School Culture will create systems and routines that promote a positive culture including but not limited to developing programming for Community Circle, Friday Family Meetings, Electives, student incentives, and field trips. This person will ensure that our students are supported to meet the high expectations that will bring our school closer to achieving groundbreaking student achievement.

Responsibilities

• Work closely and effectively with children who have behavior challenges and their families; partner with teachers and other school staff to execute individualized behavior supports and ensure the discipline system is meeting the needs of students with special needs.
• Create a calm, strict, and structured environment for student reflection on misbehaviors and mistakes made in class. ∑ Reflect with students and families when discipline problems occur to ensure behavior is understood and corrected.
• Supervise Lunch Behavior Detention each day during lunch
• Maintain strict culture and exemplary student behavior during detention.
• Build strong relationships with students and families and create open lines of communication.
• Accurately monitor and analyze daily student discipline records and homework detentions; create new systems and structures to proactively address school’s areas of need.
• In collaboration with the Director of School Culture and Counselors, plan monthly student reward events.
• Ensure all students come to school in uniform and enforce the Emblaze Academy Dress Code.
• Ensure all students attend school, and follow up with families accordingly.
• Collaborate with the Director of School Culture and Co- Heads of School on staff trainings on discipline procedures and the student code of conduct.
• Support teachers in building meaningful relationships with parents and students.

Qualifications

• Prior experience in an urban classroom where structure, incentives, and high expectations are used to drive student success
• Ability to work with a variety of learning abilities, including those with special needs and low skill level in a heterogeneously grouped classroom setting
• Demonstrated ability to work well in a team, especially with parents and community members
• Minimum two years of urban teaching preferred
• Ability to work effectively under stressful working conditions
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Fluent written and spoken Spanish strongly preferred
