We’re building the future of public transport — convenient, connected, affordable and zero-emission. Our goal is to make it easier to get from A to B with Ember than it is with your own car.

We launched in October 2020 and quickly demonstrated that it’s possible to use electric buses more intensively than anyone else in the world. This leads to a massive emissions reduction compared to a diesel bus. Running electric buses like this is only possible because we control the full-stack, including the charging network, vehicles and tech. This also allows us to provide a better passenger experience, with innovative features like demand-responsive stops.

We’ve come a long way but so far we’re only operating on a micro scale, with one route and four buses. The challenge is to scale that 10x within a couple of years. To help us reach this goal, we’ve raised nearly £2m from some of Europe’s leading climate VCs, secured a large debt facility with our ethical banking partner and locked in grant funding for additional vehicles.

Who we’re looking for

This role is all about taking care of the day to day finance function and making sure that we’re in a good position to scale the business very rapidly. You’ll initially be a team of one so you’ll need to be ready to jump between the big picture and the detail.

Initially, your priority will be to take over day to day items such as book-keeping and payroll but as you build a detailed financial understanding of the business the role will quickly start to include business model optimisation, debt structuring, internationalisation, and equity raises.

Once you’re up to speed with all the existing process, we’ll also look for you to spend time designing and implementing improvements that will make us more efficient at scale.

You don’t need to be a qualified accountant but you will need detailed knowledge of the subject, very strong spreadsheet skills and to be comfortable working with data (in spreadsheets, dashboards, and SQL). We use Xero for our day to day accounting so you should be very comfortable with their platform or demonstrate you’ll be able to become an expert on it.

What you will do

We’re still very much a startup so your role will be broad. At a minimum it will include:

• Day to day finance items such as reconciliation, payroll, supplier payments and VAT returns
• Management accounts, detailed financial modelling, cashflow analysis and what-if analysis
• Liaising and reporting to key financial partners such as our bank, investors and the government
• Looking ahead to understand the financial requirements, structures, and opportunities in new markets

The role will report directly to the founders and will have detailed exposure to the inner workings of the business, with potential to take on responsibilities in different areas as we grow.
