The Role – NVT Software Engineer

We have an exciting new opportunity for an NVT Software Engineer within the Research & Development function of the Vacuum Technique Business Area, part of the Atlas Copco Group. The role, reporting into the Technical Manager, Software.

You will join a dynamic and progressive technology team with a diverse range of skills, working in research and development of innovative software solutions to enhance Atlas Copco products. You will design and develop software that will run on multiple platforms including Cloud, PC, Single Board Computers, Embedded Platforms and Mobile. You will continuously learn about new software and technologies, increasing the overall scope of knowledge within the Team and wider organisation.

Scope of the role

• Software developer for smart device, edge computing, mainly centred around IoT
• Based in Burgess Hill (West Sussex), UK and involves working both in an office and a lab environment
• Some day trips to other Vacuum Technique sites in the UK may be required, typically to Eastbourne (East Sussex)
• Must have excellent written and spoken English and be able to clearly convey complex technical solutions to people who may not be familiar with specialist subjects
• Must have a broad enough awareness of other disciplines to allow efficient and effective communication, e.g. electronics and software engineers, system designers & engineers, project and finance managers etc.
• Must be a highly self-motivated problem solver who is equally able to work alone or as an effective team player
• Must be willing and able to plan and deliver work to agreed timescales and to adopt relevant company policies and procedures

Main Responsibilities

• Keep our customers happy by using software knowledge and experience to develop innovative applications that solve complex problems and/or demonstrate significant improvement over current solutions: e.g. innovative features, better quality, reliability, deployment, security or usability, higher performance, lower cost, etc.
• Work with teams of passionate software, electronics and mechanical engineers in the Vacuum Technique Technology Group (VTTG) to deliver creative ideas and innovative software for new technology projects
• Be part of the team that ensures our Technology Roadmap remains fresh and briming with interesting projects. Technologies include: wired & wireless communications, cyber security, cloud, mobile, microcontrollers, data visualisation, analytics & machine learning, sensors, nano-tech etc.
• Have a continuous thirst to grow knowledge of software technologies, standards, products, services and Intellectual Property (IP) and how they are being used in key industries: e.g. vacuum, compressors, automotive / transportation, industrial control & monitoring, instrumentation & measurement, medical and agricultural
• Clearly document and communicate all aspects of work across the full life-cycle of software technology projects: including roadmaps, NTV proposals, concepts, detailed designs, test results, IP, application notes, commercial propositions, final reports, project plans and status etc.

Skills, Knowledge, Experience

• Bachelor or higher-level degree in computer science, software or electronics engineering or a STEM subject
• Minimum of three years hands-on software design, programming and development, ideally in engineering or industrial applications

Solid experience with:

• C/C++, Python
• Linux and Windows operating systems
• Databases, e.g. SQLite, MySQL, SQL Server
• Version control: GIT / SVN
• MS Office Tools
• Developing software to handle data over communications protocols and structures such as TCP/IP, HTTPS, MQTT, OPC-UA, JSON, XML, SFTP etc.
• Implementing or integrating software security features, including encryption and authentication methods and standards
• Developing software on SBCs such as a RaspberryPi, BeagleBone
• IDEs: e.g. MS Visual Studio, Eclipse, PyCharm
• Software development models, including Agile, as well as software testing methods
• Software requirement engineering process
• Software development lifecycle (SDLC)
• Software design tools

It would be beneficial to have a working knowledge of:

• Cloud service platforms for IoT applications; Microsoft Azure
• Hybrid Mobile App development
• Docker / Kubernetes
• Android, iOS operating systems
• Hardware including micro-controllers, edge-devices, sensors, signal conditioning
• Automating deployment and containerised applications
• Machine Learning libraries, such as TensorFLow, PyTorch, SciKit, Pandas, Keras etc.
• Implementing Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) using any of the following: HTML, CSS
• Java, JavaScript, UWP, XAML, TKinter, PyTK, Node-Red etc.
