Organization Objective: Oversees the daily research, outreach, and collections operations of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Heritage
Center at ESPL’s Regional Library. Provides professional local history and genealogical research assistance, making resources available and accessible to the public. Consults with donors of local history materials and makes acquisition decisions. Accessions, organizes, processes and stores collections using Standard Archival Procedures. Develops modes of accessing collections including digital collections, website management, outreach activities, training, and public education. Develops Heritage Center policies for
Director and Trustee approval and oversees implementation. Assists in grant writing. Supervises Heritage Center staff.
Competencies required to successfully perform job duties:
Knowledge of U.S. and Virginia history, especially that of Accomack and Northampton counties and their local records, government and geography, USMARC bibliographic records and genealogical and archival records. Ability to search databases, catalogs, indexes, and reference materials, utilizing knowledge of the availability and sources of online genealogical records. Understanding and application of genealogical research best practices. Experience and working knowledge of Standard Archival Procedures that include organization, preservation, handling, and storage. Good vocabulary for keyword searching. Excellent customer service skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, to interact with a diverse public on a sustained basis, to reason effectively and make decisions according to policy and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work. Working knowledge of basic computer/word processing skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to provide good customer service, assisting library users, staff and administration; help train staff.
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification required for entry into position: Masters degree preferred in history, museum studies, or library science from an accredited college or university, or a combination of college courses and equivalent experience.
