This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department for International Trade’s Science and Technology Directorate to lead delivery of the Global Talent Network.
Maintaining the United Kingdom’s position at the leading edge of science and technology is vital for our future prosperity and key to enabling the UK to be a force for good on global challenges around climate, prosperity and security. Attracting highly skilled, internationally mobile talent is a crucial part of HMG’s strategy to achieve this objective.
The Global Talent Network programme focuses on identifying and attracting talented people to the UK to work in key science and technology sectors. It is launching in 2022, initially in the United States and India, with a focus on artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and life sciences, before expanding worldwide in 2023.
We are looking for confident, collaborative, outcome focused leaders to manage a high performing team (2 x SEOs) with responsibility for:
The role holder will report to the Head of the Global Talent Network (G6). There will be opportunity for the role-holder to shape their personal objectives, and they will lead objective setting for their team. They will be given support and space to grow, and there will be opportunities for international travel.
Hybrid Working
The role will be based in either London or Belfast. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.
Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Appointments will be made to candidates in merit order based on location preferences.
Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

In your personal statement, please explain your motivation for applying for this role and the extent to which you satisfy the essential and desirable requirements of the role. Maximum word count of 500 words.
In the event that there is a high volume of applications, a short sift will be conducted based on CV only. Candidates who pass the initial sift may be progressed to a full sift, or progressed straight to assessment/interview.
At interview, you will be asked to deliver a presentation on the following topic:
Please describe how you would apply your skills and experience to address three different types of challenge to delivering a cross-government business communications campaign about a new service or product.
No visual aids are permitted. The candidate will speak for no more than 5 minutes. The panel will then discuss the presentation with the candidates for up to 10 minutes.
The presentation will be used to assess the candidates experience against the essential criteria and desirable experience.
Existing Civil Servants and applicants from accredited NDPBs are eligible to apply, but will only be considered on loan basis (Civil Servants) or secondment (accredited NDPBs). Prior agreement to be released on a loan basis must be obtained before commencing the application process. In the case of Civil Servants, the terms of the loan will be agreed between the home and host department and the Civil Servant. This includes grade on return.
If successful and transferring from another Government Department a criminal record check may be carried out.

New entrants are expected to join on the minimum of the pay band.
Applicants who are successful at interview will be, as part of pre-employment screening, subject to a check on the Internal Fraud Database (IFD). This check will provide information about employees who have been dismissed for fraud or dishonesty offences. This check also applies to employees who resign or otherwise leave before being dismissed for fraud or dishonesty had their employment continued. Any applicant’s details held on the IFD will be refused employment.
A candidate is not eligible to apply for a role within the Civil Service if the application is made within a 5-year period following a dismissal for carrying out internal fraud against government.
Please note – the successful candidate will be expected to remain in post for a minimum of 18 months before being released for another role.
