About OPSS
We’re the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. We promote product safety and protect people and places while helping business to thrive. We’re here to make regulation work and deliver real world impact. Since 2018, we’ve been building a positive, creative team that’s helping us become a trusted product regulator throughout the UK. We have big plans for the coming years, and, if you share our vision, we want you to take part.
About your role
You’ll join our multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers who deliver testing on a wide range of products. We run mechanical, electrical, chemical and flammability facilities, producing the robust scientific outputs that keep the UK safe.
As Senior Engineer, you’ll oversee the day-to-day operations of our laboratories. Specialising in at least one of our facilities, you’ll test products to make sure they conform to bespoke safety standards and regulations, using specific equipment and collaborating with technology, science and engineering teams in the process.
You’ll also manage the health and safety systems of our laboratories, and assess our technical documentation to make sure it meets our standards and requirements. Aside from laboratory activities, you’ll have opportunities to develop your area of expertise by contributing to external networks, meetings and training events.
About your experience
We’re looking for experience in running laboratory activities, testing products, quality assurance and creating test plans. You’ll also need experience in fire and flammability testing.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential, and you’ll be able to deliver your findings to a wide range of audiences. You’ll also need good analytical skills and a relevant degree in a science or engineering.
About our benefits
Working with us entitles you to a competitive mix of benefits including a Civil Service pension, extensive learning and development opportunities, retail and travel discounts and flexible working.
