Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of five (5) years of work experience with the United States military, Veteran’s Affairs, or military assistance programs.
• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience with certifying VA benefits, military chapters, and certification of educational benefits.
• Demonstrated experience with VA Once.
• Valid Driver’s License

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must have use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear and handle or feel objects and controls.
• Must have physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
• Ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 10 pounds.
• Must be capable of sitting in stationary position for 50% or more of time.

Job Concepts
The Director of Veterans and Military Educational Services directs, plans, and organizes all veterans’ services initiatives. This position will provide guidance and assistance to veterans, active military, their dependents, and veterans through the processes related to military benefits, student recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation. The Director of Veterans and Military Educational Services will implement enrollment and engagement strategies to increase the military affiliated student population at BPCC. The incumbent is the VA School Certifying Official for all campuses, as mandated by the State Approving Agency and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Director manages all aspects of the BPCC Veteran Resource Center to include, staffing the center, management of the center’s informational resources, and development and maintenance of the center’s internal and external partnerships. This position requires occasional travel and evening and weekend hours.

Examples of Work

• Develops and leads the departmental vision, mission, goals, programs, services, and budget
• Leads and collaboratively partners with other campus units to promote a veteran-friendly campus
• Ensures that eligible students receive information regarding laws (existing and new), benefits and services available to them through the Department
• Assists military affiliated students with obtaining access, processing, and utilization of benefits for special programs and/or resources to include, but not limited to: Vocational Rehab, Tuition Assistance, TOPS, Title 29 Exemption benefits from the LA State Department of Veteran Affairs, DEERS, LA National Guard, DOD Tuition Assistance
• Utilizes internal systems to track outreach efforts to veterans and military-affiliated students, including regular and personal follow-ups
• Serves as the primary resource and advocate for veterans regarding their concerns
• Provides accurate information to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs regarding certification of students eligible for VA benefits
• Collaborates with staff in other campus offices to address veteran student issues (i.e., enrollment, payment, social) and to implement process changes to increase student success
• Develops and administers programs and services at the College to raise awareness and understanding of the unique needs of veterans and active military students to remove barriers to their success
• Facilitates and ensures compliance with federal, state, and other agencies by developing policies, procedures, and forms to meet the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs laws governing veterans’ educational benefits
• Develops and strengthens relationships with military and veteran alumni to identify partnership opportunities
• Directs, evaluates, and reviews the job performance of student workers and oversees their professional development and training
• Collaborates with the marketing department to promote the College’s designation as a veteran-friendly institution to prospective and enrolled veterans and their families and to promote services via social media platforms
• Directly measures the efficiency of the department through assessment planning and coordination
• Remains knowledgeable about proposed and enacted federal legislation which affects veterans’ education programs by maintaining membership in professional organizations and participating in national and regional conferences
• Leads College’s effort to maintain national and state military affiliated designations
• Gathers, monitors, analyzes, and reports military affiliated student and program data for institutional research and compliance
• Serves as a liaison and representative of the College at state, regional, and national organizations, boards, councils, committees (i.e., Statewide Certifying Official Conference, Northwest Regional School Certifying Official Conference) and educational events including those sponsored by military and veteran organizations
• Serves on College committees as appointed
• Support special projects/initiatives relevant to serving veterans and Enrollment Management
• Assists and supports programming hosted by departments within Enrollment Management
• Provides periodic reports to the Executive Director of Enrollment Management regarding progress to goal, and strategies employed to ensure the achievement of established goals
• Performs all other duties assigned
