Internships that start from May 2022 onwards will take place in our offices. Internships that start before May 2022 will take place remotely. Interns completing their internship remotely will still need to be based and have the right to work in a country in which DeepMind operates: the UK, the US, Canada and France. For both on-site and remote internships, DeepMind will provide immigration and relocation support if needed.
Applications will close on Friday 22nd October at 6pm BST
We’re looking for pioneering interns to join the Worlds team in the summer of 2022 for up to three months, full-time. We are a game development team within DeepMind that builds simulation environments to train AI agents and run experiments with them!
The environments we craft in collaboration with researchers range from bespoke mini-games aimed at answering specific research questions to expansive first-person environments using current game engines, such as Unity. Our team is essential in helping drive DeepMind’s research forward. The work we do is rewarding, and we make sure to recognise and celebrate each individual’s and team’s achievements.
As an intern in Worlds you’ll become part of our team of talented individuals who support each other and openly share ideas. You will join a small group made up of game designers, software engineers, technical artists, quality assurance testers, researchers, and program managers.
You will work on a project which contributes directly to the company’s mission and will help build your professional portfolio. You’ll be mentored by an experienced developer who will co-create the project and make sure you have all the support you need to succeed.
Our gameplay projects involve working closely with researchers to accelerate the development of game environments as we explore new avenues of research. You’ll rapidly prototype new ideas and deliver early solutions, collaborating with scientists, artists, engineers and designers to iterate on these together. You’ll add new game features to existing environments, and make brand-new environments available.
Our game systems projects develop and support our underlying infrastructure to accelerate games creation whilst helping to ensure optimum performance. For research to be efficient our training environments need to run much faster than real time, at massive scale and across global infrastructure. You will work collaboratively within the team and beyond to help build, maintain and optimise our environments.
We encourage applications from students currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree.
As a Software Engineering Intern you’ll have some experience in a modern programming language like C++, C#, Objective C or Java. If you’ve created games or prototypes in an engine like Unity or Unreal before, then we’d love to see your previous projects.
You are passionate about finding the optimal way to tackle problems, you love discussing your ideas, and are ready to commit to the plan decided with the team at the end. Technical and design challenges inspire you and you are interested to see how they fit in the overall picture. Your communication is clear, concise, and always kind.
Machine learning experience is not required for this internship position.
Opening date: 17th September 2021
Closing date: 22nd October 2021 at 6pm UK time (BST)
