The Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) contributes to the research and development of robotics, haptics, virtual/augmented reality, modelling and simulation, as well as human machine interfaces.

Providing technical support to the R&D activities of IISRI, the candidate will be responsible for analysis and programming support, specifically research and contract programming, technical problem solving, support of user acceptance testing and other general duties associated with applications for development.

Your key responsibilities will include the need to:

• Analyse, design, plan and construct software systems in collaboration with project leadership.
• Prepare technical documentation and communicate technical details to different stakeholders.
• Support and champion the continuous improvements in engineering practices using both formal retrospectives and incorporating good practice from industry and academic literature.
• Support the successful delivery of projects through implementation, testing, and integration of software components utilising best practices and a structured review process to produce robust, high quality software.
• Support project leads in the elicitation and analysis of requirements, and in highlighting and mitigating project risks.
• Produce design specifications and test plans for software components and provide estimates, work breakdown, and implementation plans for high-level project plans.
• Assist the leadership team in project operations by helping to ensure that consistent process is followed, and best practice approaches are taken.
• Work directly with project leaders in the creation of project proposals, including preparation of project plans, estimation of high-level project timelines, as well as the identification of risks and strategies to mitigate those risks.
• Lead code reviews for work performed by other team members on associated projects and champion and lead a topic of focus (e.g. web security) by identifying capability gaps and contributing to the group’s knowledge base.
• Perform any other duties as directed, commensurate with the scope and classification of the position.

To be successful, you’ll have:

• Extensive experience in developing applications using various programming languages and/or frameworks, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery and Python, PHP, Ruby, Perl
• Experience in development and interfacing using Bluetooth technologies and devices, multithreading, multitasking, C#/C++, and .NET Framework development.
• Experience in working in a structured, collaborative development environment using contemporary project management approaches (e.g. Scrum) and best practice approaches for software engineering, including the use of version control, code reviews, and continuous integration.
• Experience in using scripting languages (e.g. Bash, Python, Ruby) for building command-line utilities and applications.
• Experience in the specification and design of software systems, and the effective communication of requirements, test plans/results.
• Fundamental technical skills in the development of cloud-based software systems with a mix of server and client components (mobile and/or web), including, the ability to effectively use object-oriented and procedural programming languages, frameworks and libraries.
• Sound ability to implement user interface designs based on wireframes and mockups and proven ability to deploy and operate systems in production environments.
