Software Architect / Head of Software

We are seeking a Software Architect to be the technical leader for Phononic’s Connected Services. In this

role you will use your skills and experience to lead the technical definition and implementation of a cloud-

based strategic product offering that uses IoT-based device telemetry and control to deliver data-rich

insights and integrations that help our customers deliver superior cold-chain products and experiences

globally. You will use your broad understanding of all aspects of an enterprise IoT technical stack for

industrial / commercial products, from device firmware, edge networking, cloud-based databases, web

applications and APIs, and exception alerts and notifications. Our technical stack is based on Microsoft

Azure.

As the most senior technical leader for this area, you will partner with the product management team to

define the strategy that both delivers value to customers via new solutions and applications as well as

drives ongoing revenue and monetization for Phononic. This work includes understanding customer and

market needs, prioritizing spending and resources, and selecting implementation approaches. You will

interact with the C-staff (CEO, CPO, CFO, CMO and CRO) on a regular basis. You will be the technical

representative to external customers and partners.

Phononic’s Connected Services first launched in Fall of 2023 and currently connects to our ACT-2000

refrigerator and freezer totes across multiple customer sites. Our engineering and customer success

teams use the service today to proactively monitor our solutions in the field. The service has already

collected millions of points of telemetry to date.

Key Responsibilities :

Work with product manager to develop technical requirements and work estimations

Design and implement a software architecture to scale the current deployment to support more devices and applications.

Research new technologies and partners to identify gaps and opportunities, and recommend assessment, adoption and / or engagement aligned with strategy and priorities

Lead technical engagements with technology partners to ensure compatibility and efficiency of solutions using our IoT cloud

Define a minimum acceptable quality level of design documentation (including templates, etc.) as a key deliverable for all solutions

Perform hands-on prototyping, mock-ups and production coding as needed

Manage internal and external contract developers and testers

Support project management and / or coordinate necessary internal resources to support delivery of partner activities

Contribute to collateral generation for customer / partner acceptance

Establish peer relationships with partners and end user customers that add credibility and additional insight

Work closely with engineers, program managers and product managers based in company HQ in Durham, NC. Minimum quarterly travel to company HQ; ideally more frequently.

Minimum Qualifications :

B.S. degree in Computer Science and / or Software Engineering

10+ years hands-on full-stack development experience with cloud-based enterprise SW deployments; 5+ years leading such deployments

Strong knowledge of the IT landscape inclusive of networking, security, enterprise, and cloud infrastructure, IoT devices and protocols, device firmware and database analytics platforms and tools

Hands-on experience designing and deploying IoT solutions in a cloud environment

Familiarity with software communication protocols such as MQTT, REST, etc.

Experience working with and documenting structured software development methodologies and processes (eg SDLC)

Experience setting up DevOps practices (eg Scrum, Agile) and tools (eg JIRA).

Able to prototype technical concepts

Strong organizational / project / stakeholder management skills

Good interpersonal and persuasion skills in both written and verbal communication

Strong presentation skills

Additional qualifications that will set you apart :

Experience with Microsoft Azure and its related technical stack (eg ADX, PowerBI, Azure IoT Hub)

Strong database architecture experience in ADX KQL and PostgreSQL.

Experience in C#, Python, React / Typescript.

Knowledge of scaled Agile SAFe and PI planning.

Leading a small internal development team that heavily leverages outsourced contractors and agencies, including near-shore and off-shore teams, across different time zones.

Proficiency in applying AI and machine learning algorithms to IoT data, enabling predictive maintenance, operational efficiency, and real-time decision-making capabilities.

Knowledge of edge computing architecture and its application in IoT for real-time data processing, reducing latency, and minimizing bandwidth usage in manufacturing operations.

Proficiency in advanced analytics, data visualization tools, and techniques to transform IoT data into actionable insights and intuitive dashboards for decision-makers.

Experience deploying solutions globally, including hosting requirements for performance and compliance, international standards and regulations affecting IoT implementations
