The Head of School is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the mission, operations, curriculum, and student and parent experience at this young independent school with a strong focus on music and the performing arts. The position requires strong experience in education as both teacher and administrator and a passion for humanistic education and the performing arts. It also requires strong skills in business and organizational management, leadership and talent development, and curriculum development, as well as an entrepreneurial energy level and the drive required to lead a highly differentiated educational institution. The Head of School will report directly to the Board of Trustees.

This position will also require extensive involvement in Admissions and acquisition of new families and coordination of the music curriculum and programming.

The job includes full responsibility for the academic standards and operational performance of the school, including:

• Developing the school’s strategic plan in collaboration with the Board
• Defining the academic curriculum and standards for grades pre-K through 5 and collaborating closely with faculty and teaching artists to integrate academics with an intensive music, drama, visual arts, and dance curriculum
• Recruiting all faculty for academic subjects, performing arts, and visual arts and providing coaching and leadership to enable them to perform and grow as educators
• Provide effective annual Growth Assessments, including Objectives and measurable Key Results, with all team members to reinforce contributions, provide constructive feedback, and develop plans for ongoing professional development
• Running Open Houses to meet enrollment targets, and converting prospective parents into committed and engaged members of the community
• Producing detailed annual budgets in collaboration with the finance team, and then managing the school to meet monthly and annual financial targets
• Collaborating with the Admissions Associate and Board Chair to have an effective marketing program and raise the visibility of the school in the community
• Designing and overseeing an appropriate academic and behavioral evaluation system to determine if prospective incoming students will thrive within our academic program
• Maintaining a safe and secure environment for students at all times when they are under the supervision of the school, including systems for verification of pickups, screening faculty and staff, and safety, health, and emergency procedures
• Managing an effective parent communications program to keep parents fully informed about events and milestones at the school and in their child’s class, as well as all logistical issues
• Recruiting and supervising additional administrative staff as the organization grows
• Collaborating to establish and enforce policies on a range of key issues including student Growth Assessments, Parent-Teacher meetings, discipline, academic calendar, etc.
• Coordinating fundraising projects with the Development Committee of the Board as required for competitive scholarships and capital projects and applying for grants as eligible
• Collaborating with the Board and Real Estate Committee on plans for facility expansion to accommodate growth and the eventual addition of middle school
• Demonstrating excellence of performing arts programs and increasing reputation of the school, including concert series, choir, dance performances, and dramatic productions, as well as articles and interviews on related topics
• Nurturing the school’s culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to provide a welcoming and warm environment that reflects the richness of our community in Brooklyn

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to translate the vision for school into a world-class curriculum that draws upon established best practices for early childhood education, primary education, and ensuring the quality of instruction
• Administrative experience in elementary and/or early childhood education
• Experience and interest in academics/arts-integrated education preferred
• Demonstrated ability in curriculum management, planning, and implementation
• Experience and intellectual curiosity regarding best instructional practices and evolving educational approaches
• Demonstrated ability in design and implementation of effective professional development programs; able to engage, “coach”, support and enable teachers in becoming the best teachers they can be
• Experience with faculty evaluation strategy and practices, and providing impactful constructive teacher feedback/communication preferred
• Exceptional administrative and organizational skills are essential, including time-management skills
• Excellent communication skills; including demonstrably strong writing skills
• Experience in interdisciplinary studies and inquiry-based learning is highly preferred
• Able to play a leadership role in creating a culture of respect, professionalism, student-centricity, accountability, and educational excellence

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $90,000.00 – $125,000.00 per year
