The mission of Exploratory Studies Advising is to honor each student’s unique life story, guide students in their transition to college life, and engage students in academic exploration and development. The team works collaboratively and reports to the Director of Advising. We are a lively group with various backgrounds, identities, interests and skills. But, we unite in our professional values of student support and honoring each students’ unique life story. Exploratory Studies students are assigned a specific Academic Success Coordinator (ASC) / Advisor upon the start of their first semester. We believe the advisee / advisor relationship is important, and encourage students to schedule appointments with their assigned ASC / advisor.

Position Summary
The Academic Success Coordinators (ASC) provide academic advising, support and outreach to undergraduate students exploring majors or seeing admission to competitive majors. Through individual appointments, and a variety of programs and services, they guide and support students in the process of exploring majors, transitioning to the university and becoming successful students. The team works collaboratively and reports to the Director of Advising in University Academic Advising & Advocacy.
Required Job Qualifications
Master’s degree in Education, Business, Liberal Arts, Natural or Applied Sciences, Communication, or related field
Commitment to diversity as demonstrated by active involvement in initiatives to promote diversity and or enhanced learning experiences through diverse environments
Preferred Job Qualifications
Minimum of 1 year working in higher education programs or organizations focused in areas of student success, enrollment services, advising, student affairs, retention, or graduation efforts (2 years in a 20 hour per week experience equals 1 year of professional experience)
1 or more years of professional experience with direct student support services
Demonstrated ability to assist students striving to achieve educational goals
Demonstrated experience in coaching others through decision-making processes
Demonstrated understanding of student development and awareness of transition issues students face entering and progressing through higher education
Experience coordinating and communicating with campus organizations and departments from both academic and student affairs
Experience developing, facilitating and evaluating programs and services for students
Experience facilitating new student seminars, workshops, or similar programs
Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal, presentation, writing and digital/media
Self-motivated team player with demonstrated ability to be successful in a fast-paced work environment

Duty/Responsibility
Provide holistic, proactive academic advising to undeclared / exploring students from the first point of contact (Ram Orientation) until they declare a major.
Challenge and support students to understand the complexities of self-discovery and to begin the process of choosing a major, including problem-solving around difficult to achieve or unrealistic goals and outside pressures.
Assist students in the process of exploring majors and career choices through appointments, workshops, and programs and make appropriate referrals to campus resources.
Lead students who are frustrated due to not being able to enter competitive majors toward exploring and choosing a parallel path without giving up on earning a degree.
Assist new students in transitioning to and navigating the collegiate experience, developing more sophisticated decision-making skills, and utilizing campus resources.
Understand issues confronting under-represented students, ethnically diverse, military veterans, non-traditional aged, parents, disabled students, etc. and help them navigate how and what resources to use as well as gain confidence and connection in order to achieve their personal and professional goals.
Initiate proactive outreach with students and participate in retention and grade monitoring activities. This includes, but is not limited to students in academic difficulty, on probation, and those who are considering withdrawing from the University.
Maintain accurate and detailed advising notes through the online system, track advisees’ performance at the end of each semester, and provide intentional outreach to particular groups of students such as over 45 credits who need to declare a major.
Learn new technology and tools that are designed for student success and integrate them into a balanced and holistic approach to advising.
Confer with students requesting retroactive withdrawals and academic dismissal appeals on the appeal process and communicate a comprehensive action plan for academic improvement and success.
Act as mentors and advocates and professionally communicate with students or families who have questions or concerns about complex academic policies, individual courses or grades, and/or tuition assessment and lead them to understanding and resolution.

Maintain knowledge of Colorado State University majors, campus resources, information systems, and university policies and procedures and be able to interpret to students and families.
Actively contribute to sharing knowledge and refining policies in the department as well as at campus advising committees such as the Advising Network meetings, Professional Advisor Network, Campus Advising Foundations Training, and beyond.
Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with Student Diversity Programs, academic departments, student affairs offices, student groups, and other university resources.
Engage in continual learning and integration into advising work of student development theories, developmental advising best practices, and social justice.
In cooperation with supervisor, design and implement a plan for professional development.
