Job Description

Under immediate supervision, the Book Shelver staff member assists in various areas through the library and within programs. Employee must be detail oriented, organized and thorough when completing work tasks. Daily contact with public requires courtesy, tact and diplomacy. Job Responsibilities

1. Assists patrons on a limited basis.

2. Performs clerical duties as needed.

3. May participate in internal library committees.

4. Maintains neat and clean personal and work area appearance.

5. Exhibits dependability and punctuality in regards to attendance.

6. Sorts and returns materials according to established procedures.

7. Maintains items in order on shelves and displays and reports irregularities to immediate supervisor.

8. Locates materials for patrons and departments.

9. Schedules meeting rooms for internal and external customers.

10. Completes setup of meeting rooms as planned with customer.

11. Monitors use of meeting rooms during events.

12. Assists with the creation of marketing tools such as posters, brochures, etc.

13. Troubleshoots problems with library equipment including computers, photocopiers, etc.

14. Assists with tours, outreach, programs, and special projects.

15. Monitors assigned department. Explains and enforces library policies and procedures to the public.

16. Provides digital literacy instruction. Assists patrons with a variety of devices to access electronic resources.

19. Provides collection development and collection maintenance support.

20. Assists in marketing with the preparation of reading lists, reader’s advisory activities, displays, and publications.

21. May assist in supervising Work Study Students and Volunteers.

22. May assist in training other staff members.

23. Performs other job related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Requirements – 1. Job requires a diploma from an accredited high school or GED equivalent.

2. Previous job experience in a customer service field is preferred. Library experience is a plus.

3. Able to serve the public in a courteous manner, using tact and diplomacy.

4. Able to use office equipment to include computer, copy machine, and scanner.

5. Able to perform clerical duties efficiently.

6. Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.

7. Current, valid TX Class C driver’s license preferred. Physical Requirements

1. Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioning building, with minimum health hazards.

2. Work involves frequent lifting and shelving of individual books ranging from 2 to 10 lbs.

3. Job requires normal physical activity, including pushing and pulling fully loaded book trucks weighing up to 200 lbs.

Additional Information

1. Position has no supervisory responsibilities.

2. Part Time position with limited benefits.
