Types of summer jobs available:
Day Camp Counsellors
Camp Counsellors provide a quality outdoor experience designed to help children develop an awareness and appreciation of the natural environment. Counsellors are responsible for the daily supervision and safety of groups of children as they guide and assist them through outdoor activities, such as canoeing, kayaking, sailing, wall climbing, swimming, archery, mountain biking, and more.
Engineering
Engineering summer staff assist Construction Services with inspections, surveying assignments, traffic studies and other engineering duties. They assist in the review of completed designs, drawings, specifications and estimates for accuracy and adherence to current standards. They work as a helping hand on road construction, helping the Field Inspector oversee multiple operations in the field.
General Labour/Maintenance
Duties include painting, weeding and grass cutting, litter collection, trimming brush, sweeping/mopping, delivering supplies to different facilities, etc.
Information Technology
Information Technology summer staff assist internal staff with resolving technical issues with their service or equipment. They are the first point of contact for all IT related issues or questions.
Job duties include:
Land Reclamation
Duties will include planting multi-pot seedlings at various locations (remote and urban), digging up and transplanting forest floor vegetation, shoveling, bagging and manually hauling agricultural limestone to reclamation sites and spreading it by hand, loading and unloading vehicles with vegetation and bagged lime.
Library
Duties include assisting in the planning and delivery of the Library’s Summer Reading Club activities. This position is required to set up and take down the program venues, meet and introduce the entertainers and interact with the public. The programmer may also help out with in house programs, preparing craft activities, reading stories and helping staff with the program delivery.
Museum / Tour Guides
Museum / tour guide summer staff conduct visitor tours of the museum sites and run workshops to promote museum artifacts and collections. They also perform general office duties, including cataloguing artifacts.
Office and Clerical
Perform various reception and clerical duties. Departments that typically hire office/clerical summer students are:
Parks
Assist in the maintenance of grounds and facilities including shoveling, raking, mowing grass, trimming branches, laying sod, planting, and emptying garbage bins.
Playgrounds
This role requires staff to maintain safety and supervision of small to large groups of children on a daily basis while leading exciting and interactive games and activities. Activities included in this program are a mix of active and passive games, sports, arts and crafts, as well as weekly off-sites. With roughly 30 playground sites throughout the City of Greater Sudbury, it is possible to have a reporting location at a site anywhere within the city. Please note that site placements are not guaranteed.
Special Events
Special event staff will be required to assist in the administration of special events and liaise closely with special event organizers and different groups. Duties include ensuring that events run smoothly with a focus on legislation and risk management. Other duties may include program advertising, facility matching, coordinating equipment and public speaking.
Tourism
Tourism staff assist with summer events, provide content for social media pages, provide support to staff at Tourism Information Centres and keep tourism brochure racks fully stocked across Greater Sudbury.
Waterfront Lifeguards
Waterfront Lifeguards are stationed at our local beaches. They ensure all swimming guidelines are being followed, warn swimmers of potential dangers and administer lifesaving actions in emergency situations
