Oh, look… Another job ad! It’s no secret. Everyone seems to be looking for help right now. And so are we.
Checkmate Cabs is a family-run business that has been serving Kelowna and area since 1988. We believe in integrity, treating people well and helping our customers get where they’re going.
We currently need awesome drivers to join our team (seriously, we really need drivers!)
You may be thinking, “Hold up, drive a taxi?!? Aren’t they going the way of the dinosaurs?”
Not at Checkmate. Demand for our service is really high, and we have a loyal customer base. Our phone is ringing off the hook every day. We have customers who are in need of rides; we have vehicles waiting to be driven; what we need right now are drivers like you!
What do you need to drive a taxi?
The major qualification is a Class 4 Driver’s License (we can help you figure this out if you don’t currently have one). Drivers with a Class 1, 2, or 3 license can also drive a taxicab in B.C. Please be aware that there’s typically a waiting period before being able to take a Class 4 road test. Here are estimated road test wait times as of February 2023 (please note; if you’re in Kelowna, you can drive to another place, such as Penticton, to take your road test):
You’ll also need a clean Driver’s Abstract and a criminal record check.
In addition to the legal stuff, a friendly personality helps too. Some drivers enjoy chit-chatting with our customers and some prefer to keep quiet and focus on the road, but being kind, helpful, and respectful is a given.
So how does the driving bit work?
The first thing to note, if you drive for us, you’ll be an independent contractor, not an employee.
Our drivers pick up shifts based on what works for them, drive a licensed vehicle provided by Checkmate (no wear and tear on your own vehicle) and get our customers to their destinations.
Our standard shifts are typically 12 hours, but we offer plenty of flexibility. If you’re looking for shorter hours or part-time work, we can help. Let us know what you need, and we’ll see what can be done!
How much money can you expect to make?
It varies depending on the shift, but an average of $200/day plus tips is a realistic expectation. Revenue and non-cash tips are paid weekly.
What’s next?
If the idea of driving for a living while working for yourself sounds like fun, please send us your resume and let’s chat!
