House Leader
This role attracts a 2 point paid allowance and 0.2 FTE release from teaching.
The College Community
Having commenced in 2017 with 86 students across Kindergarten to Year 6, St Luke’s at Marsden Park is a next generation learning community within the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP). As a ‘next generation Catholic Learning Community’ we are designing and establishing the ‘new normal’ for preschool to post school learning in an environment characterised by a flexible, stage based curriculum which nurtures and grows faith-filled, curious children to become creative contributors and innovative problem solvers for a changing world. In 2023 we now enrol over 1600 students from Kindergarten to Year 11 in addition to 59 children per day in our long day centre with our first HSC cohort due to graduate in 2023.
Role Outline
Ultimately responsible to the Principal Leader, a team of House Leaders is accountable to an Assistant Principal for co-leading the pastoral care and wellbeing priorities across the Schools of Leadership and Entrepreneurship. House Leaders develop effective pastoral care and wellbeing approaches to enable and support each student’s learning growth, and development of capabilities as expressed through the St Luke’s 6 Pillars of Learning.
House Leaders assist the Principal in implementing wellbeing and pastoral care initiatives at the College by working collaboratively with a team of homegroup teachers to ensure each student’s academic, spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing is supported. Reporting directly to an Assistant Principal, the House Leader:
Provides leadership necessary for Homegroup Teachers to discern the special talents and nurture and support the learning of students in their care;
Ensures an all pervading sense of House spirit;
Displays loyalty towards, and is supportive of College Leaders; and,
Liaises with the Wellbeing Leader and supports the continued implementation of wellbeing initiatives.
As a group, the House Leaders work collaboratively with the College counsellors and Allied Health agencies beyond the College to strengthen a positive culture of learner agency at the College.
Requirements of the Role – The House Leader will:
Support the Principal in the ministry of leadership, reflecting the mission of the Church by modelling respectful relationships with colleagues, students and families.
Ensures students and their families are well known within their House..
Maintain a relational approach to team building through collaboration and critical thinking.
Foster an innovative teacher mindset which supports best practice pastoral care.
Model highly accomplished approaches to student wellbeing.
Possess high level communication skills and interpersonal skills including empathy and confidentiality.
Undertake professional learning as a connected educator who contributes to the ongoing development of our wellbeing ecosystem.
Support homegroup teachers to provide the highest levels of care for students.
Initiate and engage in professional discussions with colleagues in a range of forums to evaluate wellbeing practice to improve educational outcomes of students.
Functions of the Role
The House Leader supports the Principal and Assistant Principal to develop and implement best practice pastoral care. Furthermore, the House Leader supports the Principal and Wellbeing Leader to plan, prepare, teach and evaluate wellbeing courses as developed by the Wellbeing Leader. Specifically:
In the Leadership of Homegroup Teachers, the House Leader:
Promotes restorative practices and provide assistance and professional development for staff in embedding this approach within the House;
Encourages staff in their guidance and support of students, especially in Homegroup;
Regularly liaise and meets with the their of Homegroup Teachers;
Regularly consults with Homegroup Teachers and Subject Teachers regarding students’ attendance and progress;
Inducts and monitors staff and students new to the House;
Ensures that House staff remain abreast of House activities and events, pastoral care and wellbeing policies and processes;
Provides regular and constructive feedback to staff in the House;
Supports the pastoral care of staff in the House and where necessary refers the matter to a Senior Leader.
In the Leadership of Student Pastoral Care and Wellbeing, the House Leader:
Is present for students during morning Homegroup and regularly visits Homegroups within the House;
Ensures students within their House adhere to College expectations, especially with regards to Uniform and Appearance;
Organises and leads House Assemblies;
Organises appropriate social and other activities for the House;
Refers students to special support services including the College Counsellor;
In liaison with senior leaders, writes references for students in the House;
Oversees an orientation process for students in the House and new to the College;
Encourages strong support of school events, e.g. Masses, Community Days, and extra-curricular involvement;
Meets with House student leaders to organise participation in House, College and community events;
Recognises the achievements of students in the House;
Monitors the attendance of all students in their House and enacts the College Attendance policy where applicable;
Ensure academic care of students by monitoring the academic progress of all students in the House:
Liaises with Pedagogy Coaches and teachers to inform parents of progress and assist with regular student monitoring procedures;
Communicates with parents;
Communicates regularly with the Assistant Principal regarding student behaviour;
Maintains student records regarding pastoral matters involving students within their House;
Informs the Head of School and Enrolments Secretary of the imminent departure of any students and assists with clearance procedures.
As a member of the Pastoral Care Team, the House Leader:
Assists with the Year 6 into 7 enrolment process;
Works collaboratively with the other House Leaders and members of the Pastoral Care Team;
Attends House and other Middle Leader Meetings; and,
Undertakes relevant professional learning activities.
