Ubuntu Desktop aims to be the preferred Linux for professionals and consumers. We are seeking a director of engineering with outstanding leadership and management qualities, as well as a clear vision for the future of the open source desktop. The nature of the work requires a deep understanding of the existing Linux desktop technology stack and community dynamics across multiple upstream projects. Candidates must have experience of engineering management in a company that ships software products, and the Linux desktop technology stack.

Software engineering at Canonical is entirely distributed. We meet twice a year for stretches of up to two weeks. International travel is required to participate in those meetings. As a senior lead in our engineering organisation, this role is expected to have a clear view of their product and community strategy and how that fits into the broader Canonical Ubuntu narrative of enterprise and community open source.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished technologist, proven leader, strong speaker and motivator, with management and organisational skills.
