Camp Fire Wilani Hiring for Camp Jackalope at Veneta, Oregon Full Time

THIS JOB IS IN OREGON.

The Camp Jackalope primary function is to provide positive, safe, logistical support for the Camp Fire Wilani Summer Camp program. Camp Jackalopes provide facility-based logistical support in a wide variety of areas. Jackalopes are “Jacks of all trades” with training and abilities to make them valuable in multiple areas. Camp Jackalopes work closely with leadership staff to support camp programs. This position demands a significant amount of physical strength and endurance. 

Reports to: Outdoor Program Co-Directors

Compensation

• Local: no housing – commute to-and from site: $1000 per week. 
• Out-0f-Area: Housing and some meals provided: $800 per week
• Benefits: 2 days paid sick time. 
• Bi-monthly direct deposit or written check as requested. 
• Direct deposit is strongly preferred. Staff should provide  banking information for direct deposit.

Dates

Optional move in: July 13th from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM

Lifeguard Training and Certification (optional) or Set Up Days: July 14th-15th, 2022

Move Out and/or Shut Down Day: August 27th, 2022

Monday – Friday: 8:15 AM – 4:30 PM
Day Camp 1: July 25th – 29th

FAMILY CAMP (One Weekend Only)
August 5th – 7th
Friday:  1:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Sunday: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM (includes cabin cleaning)

RESIDENT CAMP
Mini Camp: August 10th – 12th 
Wednesday: 12:00 PM – Friday: 12: 00 PM
Resident Camp Week: August 21st – 26th
Sunday: 12:00 PM – Friday: 12:00 PM

Essential Functions

• Physical ability walk 8-10 miles per day and lift up to 50 lbs. 
• Must be able to assist staff and campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
• Must possess the strength and endurance required to maintain a rigorous summer schedule.
• Must have the physical stamina do a variety of lifting, carrying, and moving jobs onsite. 
• Must be able to manage personal time to be rested and ready to meet the needs of camp.
• Must possess exceptional decision making skills, sound judgement, and maturity.
• Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
• Ability to safely and responsibly drive Camp Fire Wilani Vehicles following all related policies. 
• Strong willingness and desire to work with diverse populations.
• Ability to communicate in an effective, timely, and positive manner
• Must be able to provide exceptional customer service to staff, participants, leadership, and partners. 
• Must submit self-reported health history form and immunization record prior to first day of work. All
  submissions will be reviewed by the medical supervisory team.
• Must be able to adhere to the Camp Fire’s zero-tolerance drug, alcohol, and tobacco policy.
• VACCINES: Proof of COVID-19 vaccines and all available boosters required.

Job Duties

• Safeguards the physical well being of all participants and staff people. 
• Assists in arrival and departure duties including: driving staff in the camp van to and from the bus pick up and drop off site for day camp. 
• Assists in arrival and departure by directing traffic. 
• Assists camp families in moving luggage.
• Moves and stocks firewood and builds fires for camp programs. 
• Picks up food orders at Costco and US Foods Chef Store for Kitchen Team. 
• Takes down, puts up, and assists with canoes at the canoe area. 
• Aids in setting up and breaking down camp program and housing areas seasonally. 
• Assists with property disposing of garbage and recycling. 
• Is well versed in camp Emergency Protocols and have the ability to aide in the facilitation of rescue and evacuation procedures if necessary (training provided). 
• Assists the Kitchen Team in light meal preparation (chopping, portioning) and set up for meals (Oregon Food Handler’s Card certification and training provided). 
• Assists in set up and breakdown of program areas daily. 
• Assists with testing and cleaning of 40,000 commercial pool (training provided). 
• Participates in some all-camp activities such as counselor hunt and other all-camp activities. 
• Assists with camp programs such as outdoor cooking, low ropes, archery, canoes, and other program areas as needed. 
• Engages in occasional weed-whipping using power equipment (training provided). 
• Adheres to a daily schedule and maintains timely attendance to meals, program activities, etc.
• Models risk management techniques in every aspect their work (training provided). 
• Uses positive language and refrains from using swear words or discussing inappropriate subjects around campers. 
• Assists in managing the proper use, care, and maintenance of program supplies and camp assets.
• Identifies and works to solve problems collaboratively with coworkers and leadership.
• Treats all participants with patience and loving kindness.
• Promotes a positive environment that fosters fun, safety and promotes Camp Fire values.

Other Job Duties

• Aides in the cleaning and preparation of camp between sessions.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Minimum Age: 21
• Driver’s License with Clean Driving Record
• Ability to pass an enhanced FBI Criminal Background Check
• Must adhere to zero tolerance drug, alcohol, and tobacco policy
• Willingness and ability to obtain Oregon Food Handler’s Card (paid for by Camp Fire Wilani)
• Willingness to be certified in First Aid/CPR (paid for by Camp Fire Wilani – season completion required)

PRESENTATION EXPECTATION

• Staff shirts and/or sweatshirts are required on arrival and departure days.
• Name tags on Camp Fire lanyards are required every program day. 
• Staff should present neat and clean, no stained or torn clothing.
• No perfumes or cologne are allowed.
• Clothing should be neutral and free of swear words, political statements. sexual imagery, religious imagery, violent, racist, or misogynistic imagery.
• Staff should plan to shower at least every other day and keep their staff shirt clean and unwrinkled.
• Closed-toed shoes (boots) and socks are required during program times and during training.
• Work gloves and eye protection provided as needed. 

PHONES: Cell phones are not to be used in front of campers! The only coverage for cell phones at Camp Wilani is Verizon. There is limited which is only available at the Health Center on a limited basis. In Veneta (5 minutes away) and Eugene (30 minutes away) there is full coverage from all American carriers.

INTERNET: Limited internet at the Health Center only, on off-time only. Also at the Veneta Library, 1.6 miles from camp.

POLICIES

• Alcohol, tobacco, vaping, marijuana, drugs of any kind are strictly prohibited.
• Staff are required to wear their provided staff shirt and/or sweatshirt on arrival and departure days. 
• Name tags on provided Camp Fire lanyards are required every program day. 
• Shorts or long pants are required.
• Closed-toed shoes with socks are required for training and programs times.
• Staff may not leave site during program times unless for a work assignment or illness/injury and departure must be  approved by their supervisor.
• Foul language, sexual subjects, yelling, screaming, swearing, etc. is not appropriate behavior for camp.

OPTIONAL HOUSING

• Housing is provided onsite in simple cabins.
• Cabins have light, electricity, heat and clean camp mattresses.
• Bathrooms are in near by bathhouses with hot showers, flush toilets, and sinks.
• Cabins have bunk beds and wooden floors.
• Staff should back light and bring a sleeping bag and pillow.
• Our camp is in the forest. Is was established in 1960 and it is a beloved children’s camp. It is not a resort. We love its  simplicity and rustic feel. We liken it to “glamping” or glorified camping. There is wildlife including  mosquitoes, bees, and occasionally mice (which we attend to), there are squirrels and chipmunks. 

OPTIONAL FOOD

• Outdoor Staff kitchen provided for staff use at all times during residence. 
• Food must be secured in air-tight containers and should not be kept in cabins.
• Very limited food storage is available.

OPTIONAL MEAL PROGRAM: (B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner) 

During residential programs, staff eat the same meals as our campers.
