About California State PTA
California State PTA (California Congress of Parents, Teachers, and Students, Inc.) is a
professional, nonprofit volunteer led organization committed to the well-being of all children and families. It is a constituent organization of National PTA, serving as a link between the national organization and its membership within the state. PTAs are a vital part of schools and communities across the state, with approximately 3,500 PTAs in California and more than 500,000 members.
The mission of California State PTA is to positively impact the lives of all children and
families.
Key programs and activities of California State PTA include:
Representing the interests of children before the legislature, Governor and other state and federal agencies;
Participation in statewide meetings and conferences of allied groups, agencies, and coalitions having goals similar to PTA;
Leadership training, resources, and support, including through a statewide annual
convention, field services, workshops, and online training;
Providing programs and services, materials, and publications to local leaders and
members; and serving as a clearinghouse for PTA information and as a coordinating agency for PTA work in the state; and
Strengthen our voice for children, youth, and families by rebuilding, retaining, and
increasing membership.
The work of California State PTA is carried out by a 14-member Board of Directors and a 100-member Board of Managers. The association’s work is accomplished by commissions
and standing and special committees, working in partnership with staff.

The Opportunity
California State PTA, the largest and oldest child advocacy association in America, is seeking a
collaborative and inspiring leader who will partner with the Board of Directors to strategically guide the organization forward as its new Managing Director. This is a unique opportunity to be a key contributor in an organization that is at an exciting inflection point focused on innovation, growth, and development.
The Managing Director is directly responsible for managing the day-to-day functions of the offices of California State PTA. They will provide leadership to staff and collaborate with the board on vision, direction, and continuity toward achieving California State PTA’s mission, goals, and objectives. They are responsible for the overall successful operation and performance of the California State PTA staff, including strategy, oversight of programs, volunteer engagement, fundraising, and resource development efforts. Working in close partnership with the Board of Directors, the Managing Director maintains the fiscal health and structural soundness of the organization.
Keeping California State PTA’s mission as the focus, the Managing Director will help shape the vision and strategy for innovation and growth in partnership with the Board of Directors, harnessing the organization’s immense potential for increased reach and impact in the field. This is a wonderful opportunity for a passionate leader to build on California State PTA’s current work and past successes to create new opportunities in support of all children and families throughout the state of California.
The Managing Director s to the Board of Directors and is an ex-officio, non-voting member of that body. The Managing Director works closely with the organization’s elected State President/CEO and oversees a staff of approximately fifteen employees.
The Managing Director is appointed by, is evaluated annually by, and works in close collaboration with the Board of Directors.
Candidate Profile
Proven success in a membership-focused organization, team management, budgeting and finance, resource development, and program development and implementation is essential in this position. This position requires a proactive professional with strong communication skills, a thoughtful, organized approach to planning and decision-making, and experience and comfort working with and supporting volunteer leaders. Partnering with the Board of Directors, Board of Managers, volunteer leadership, and staff, the Managing Director will possess the skill to understand and bring together various personalities and working styles. This candidate will also have experience leading diverse groups and organizations to build successful working partnerships. An excellent candidate should be knowledgeable about local and statewide issues that impact children, families, and schools.

The Managing Director will be an experienced leader with an entrepreneurial and enthusiastic spirit, with the background and skillset to deliver on the mission and vision of California State PTA. This individual will be a proven strategic thinker with the ability to understand and balance complex and discrete constituent needs. The Managing Director will be highly organized and thorough, with the ability to diagnose critical areas for attention and develop and implement clear, action-oriented, innovative strategies that address challenging problems with thoughtful, effective solutions.
Organizational Excellence & Business Acumen
The Managing Director will possess the ability to challenge the status quo yet employ a compassionate leadership approach in building the culture of California State PTA. This individual will invest in staff development with a collaborative and mentoring leadership style and will be adept at creating a healthy organizational culture thriving on clarity, transparency, honesty, and reliable follow-through. They will excel at matching California State PTA’s capacity to its resources and will ensure that there is the necessary infrastructure and support to meet California State PTA’s short- and long-term organizational needs.
This Managing Director will have a strong record of successful management of finance and operations for a nonprofit and/or member-based, multimillion-dollar organization. They will have the business savvy needed to oversee and optimize California State PTA’s operations, along with knowledge of nonprofit management practices. This individual will ensure fiduciary responsibility, sound financial management practices, and accountability. This individual will have the perspective to consider the impact of decisions, strategic plans or initiatives, and programs of the organization to make sound recommendations to the Board of Directors accordingly.
Revenue Generation & Fundraising
As the lead fundraiser for California State PTA, the Managing Director will be enthusiastic about establishing strategic partnerships and connections with the funding community. They will be a versatile and experienced fundraising leader with a measurable track record of success in development, including diversifying and securing funding from a variety of sources. In close collaboration with the Board of Directors, this individual will be instrumental in developing the strategy to increase the organization’s fundraising potential and activities, as well as identifying additional revenue streams. Bringing a fresh perspective, the Managing Director will effectively communicate California State PTA’s value proposition for members and will identify opportunities and strategies for increasing membership.
Relationship Builder, Skilled Communicator, and Collaborator
The Managing Director will value clear, consistent, and transparent communication in order to build trust with California State PTA staff, Board of Directors, Board of Managers, PTA leaders, and partners. They will be able to build internal structures to support transparent communication and feedback. This individual will possess outstanding relationship building and networking abilities and act as a constituent builder and connector to advance the mission of California State PTA. A successful candidate will have the ability to develop robust and trusting partnerships with all internal and external constituents. The Managing Director will work to find efficiencies and opportunities for the benefit of the organization. They will treat others respectfully and be thoughtful, open, and accessible.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is
$140,000 – $160,000 with a generous benefits package.
