About this role
In this role will be part of the Voice Services test team. This team performs the test and validation for the core of BT’s network which underpins the country’s critical communication systems. The team are also responsible for the interconnection of multiple networks carriers as well as connection to customers and mobile providers.
This is an important role where we develop and test services which support BT’s UK and Global networks including hospitals and other blue light services and it is critical that these network elements are tested to a high standard before entering live operation
As a Test Engineer within the Voice Infrastructure team you will be accountable for executing test scenarios within BT’s model network to prove that new hardware and software configurations are safe to connect to the live networks and that they operate to the necessary design specification meeting customer requirements.
This is a multi-faceted role, the work can be very varied and includes the full lifecycle of hardware and software and service testing. You will be supported by our Test Professionals and Specialists who will provide guidance and mentoring in technical aspects of the systems under test and associated test tools.
You’ll have the following responsibilities
You’ll be part of a wider team that consists of 250 people who look after the development, testing and operation of the UK’s core IP telephony systems. You will be responsible for the full end to end life cycle of platforms all of which are developed in house. The test team comprises of 45 people where they test a variety of platforms from QA code state in development, integration and performance testing. You’ll be part of a very friendly team that are continuing to grow and develop so expect to make new friends.
It’s an exciting time to join us as we have recently implemented a big change as we automate as much as we can. This role is all about enabling change and getting the automation environment in place to ensure we deliver on requirements.
In this role you will be very hands on and will use a variety of test tools and manual coding methods. Working with automation project team where we convert manual testing to automated testing. You work on a variety of projects including some configuration and test model configuration activity.
This role provides an excellent opportunity for you to build and develop skills including Telecomms skills, SIP Signalling and RTP media. You’’ get to work on platforms for many different lines of business across BT e.g. Openreach, Enterprise, Technology and Global.
Key responsibilities:
- Test Design – Design of test cases and preparation of suitable test specification documents when provided with a high level test strategy.
- Testing – Execution of tests to agreed test specification keeping suitable records to ensure QA process can met, test schedules should be agreed and tracked with test manager.
- Interoperability Testing – Working with an external CP or equipment vendor to undertake an agreed test specification to prove compatibility of interconnected systems and determine correct configuration settings.
- Problem Management – Ensure all issues detected are recorded, tracked and supporting evidence recorded (call traces etc) are logged on the problem management system.
- Fault investigations –Lead investigation and proactive own problem resolution across BT test teams, provide regular updates and escalation to line manager dependant on priority of issue.
- Production of test results documentation and associated test evidence to determine the suitability of a system under test for STC3 signoff, this can include documentation for NCF and STC3 quality gates

You’ll have the following skills & experience
You will have a technical background (this could include telecoms, software, or technical skills such as an electrician or web development) with the ability to test hardware and software applications.
As well as working collaboratively as part of a team you will be comfortable working unsupervised and will enjoy the autonomy this role provides.
Experience of working with the MS Office applications.
You will have high attention to detail on all things technical and will enjoy the challenge of managing a busy and varied workload.
