The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) is a professional body of over 2,300 members from both the UK and overseas, formed to promote and represent the best interests of dermatologists and patients affected by diseases of the skin. Our objects are:
Our funding is primarily derived from our journals, events / conferences, educational activities and membership fees.
The British College of Dermatology is the newly launched educational arm of the British Association of Dermatologists. The role of the BCD is to oversee the development of dermatology curricula, the running of educational courses and events mapped to these curricula, and the provision of dermatology-related educational resources for a wide range of healthcare professionals. The BCD
functions to ensure these resources are accredited, quality-assured training frameworks for a wide range of healthcare professionals with an interest in dermatology, including GPs, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals. The overarching aim of all of the BCD’s work is to improve overall patient care in dermatology.
Some of the BCD’s existing workstreams include:
Undergraduate Dermatology Workstream: this workstream provides support and guidance for medical schools through its undergraduate dermatology curriculum. It also provides resources and events for undergraduates, including ‘Dermatology: A Handbook for Medical Students and Junior
Doctors’.
SAS and CESR Workstream: this workstream provides support and guidance for SAS doctors with an interest in dermatology. It also provides information and support for those looking to join the dermatology specialist register through the CESR route.
Nursing Workstream: The BCD has established collaborations with the BDNG to improve the dermatology content of the nursing curricula. This has also led to the development of a dermatology role descriptor document that details succession planning and career progress for nurses and AHPs working and looking to progress in advanced clinical practice.
Digital Innovations Workstream: With the movement to online consultations, the BCD has been at the forefront of developing and supporting education for the digital age by supporting 5 Topol fellows working in dermatology with HEE and NHSX, as well as leading on a digital dermatology workstream. The workstream is also working closely with HEE on updating the online learning portal e-lfh with dermatology content mapped to the new curriculum. The workstream has also negotiated access for trainees to an online dermatopathology portal to supplement learning.
Post CCT fellowship and GPwER workstreams: Dermatology continues to be an extremely popular specialty and the BCD provides quality assured learning opportunities via the Post CCT fellowship and GPwER workstreams. The post-CCT curricula-based fellowships allow for department- based tertiary training for consultants wishing to accredit their learning with the BAD. GPs are also invited to quality-assure their dermatology experience via the BCD GPwER accreditation process. Working with the RCGP, the BCD has piloted and developed a framework on dermatology and skin surgery.
Pharmacist Workstream: aims to develop job plans for pharmacists working in dermatology and sample business cases for consultants looking to recruit specialty pharmacists into their departments. The workstream will also be developing dermatology content and education for community pharmacists.
Our structure
The charity is governed by seven Officers, elected from the BAD membership. A wider Executive
Committee is formed of the Officers, a lay representative, co-opted members and Regional
Representatives, and this committee is responsible for guiding the overall strategy and policies of the association. The day-to-day work of the association is carried out by a team of 46 staff, supported by a number of expert sub-committees and patient / lay representatives.
Please note: We are based in Willan House, a listed building with limited wheelchair accessibility.
We are working with access consultants to see if this can be remedied. If you are a wheelchair user, full remote working may be offered as an alternative to hybrid working, until we can provide a fully accessible workspace, based on your individual requirements.
