Are you someone who has been a leader in PSHE, anti-bullying or equality in an education setting who wants to join a forward-thinking team of professionals focused on improving the health and wellbeing of the diverse children and young people in Brighton and Hove? Do you have great communication skills and the ability and resilience to lead in this challenging but rewarding area?
We welcome applications from all sections of the community but particularly encourage applicants from a BME or White Other background as well as those who identify as disabled, male, LGB or trans as these groups are currently under-represented in our Directorate workforce.
Interview date: 17th May 2022
For an informal discussion, please contact Ashley Seymour-Williams – (Senior Education Adviser) on 07795336030.
Brighton & Hove is a great place to live, learn and work. Our diverse and vibrant community is passionate about our city and there’s a shared commitment to celebrating and promoting all that makes Brighton & Hove so unique.
Working for Brighton & Hove City Council means you’ll be joining an organisation that’s active in the community and developing its transformative journey so we can continue to do the best for the city. For more information about our city council plan please see brighton-hove-city-council-plan-2020-2023.pdf
Part of the evolving landscape of the city are changes to the demographics of the residents with one in five from groups now identifying as black or from a minority ethnic group. This number is higher amongst our pupils in our schools with 27.4% of pupils from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) (1) backgrounds and 14.2% communicating in a language other than English at home. There are also an increasing number of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in our care. 18% of our residents were born outside the UK and we are proud to be a City of Sanctuary. However, this rich diversity is not yet fully reflected in the staff working in education settings or for the city council.
Your role will sit within the Education and Skills service which works with schools and settings to ensure the highest outcomes for all children and young people particularly those who are disadvantaged. Working in education at Brighton & Hove is exciting, at times challenging and always interesting. We work in close partnership with all our diverse community and voluntary aided schools, free schools and academies. The Partnership works together to strengthen the “whole city family” of education to ensure equality and success for all with no child, young person or institution left behind.
In common with all cities in the country, there are considerable and significant issues related to poverty, inequality and fairness for many of our residents. There are also reductions in local government funding, rising demand for our services, and the impact of COVID-19 and uncertainty in the world.
Support we can offer
In return for your contribution and commitment, we offer a friendly and welcoming place to work, with a competitive salary and benefits package, and a team of talented staff who all care deeply about the city they serve. Our offer to you is encapsulated in our People Promise which includes:
You will work with and be supported by the Education Adviser for anti-racism and senior leaders in Families, Children and Learning and relevant other teams such as Early Years Team, Ethnic Minority Achievement Service, Traveller Education Service and the Brighton & Hove Inclusion Support Service. Partnership working with education settings and community and voluntary groups such as the Brighton & Hove Educators of Colour Collective, parents, carers and young people will be central to the role. We also recognise that there are additional challenges working in equality and anti-bullying and we provide coaching and mentoring support from the council and its workers’ networks if wanted.
If you believe that you have the skills, drive and expertise to contribute to this important work we would be delighted to receive your application.
In this job description we use the terms racially minoritised and BAME (Black Asian and Minority Ethnic) to refer to children and young people and families who experience racism: including children and young people of colour and those from groups racialised as White but who may be subjected to prejudice, i.e.those from Gypsy Roma Traveller and Jewish backgrounds. We recognise there are complexities in using language to describe groups of people and this language will be subject to change.
Please read our Apply for a job at the council (brighton-hove.gov.uk) pages carefully. They give you all the guidance you need to complete your application as well as information on what will happen after you’ve submitted your application and at interview.
As part of your application, you will need to upload your CV and answers to some shortlisting questions.
