Bright Beginnings, Inc. is a non-profit organization that operates early childhood and family learning centers for families experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to meet the needs of children and families living in homeless environments by: providing children with a safe, nurturing educational environment; preparing children to enter kindergarten ready to learn; and supporting homeless parents to stabilize their home lives and become self-sufficient.
Summary: The Staff Accountant is responsible for general ledger management, account reconciliation, cash receipts processing, preliminary monthly accounting cycle closing, preparing and analyzing financial reports, and providing support for all financial audits. The position must be well versed in generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), federal grants and Uniform Grant Guidance.
Essential Duties:
1. Maintain financial record keeping and internal reporting systems such as budget reports to managers.
2. Responsible for entering vendor bills, paying bills, preparing 1099’s, reconciling monthly credit card statement, and posting daily cash receipts.
3. Assist in preparation of invoices and documentation for federal and state grants, responsible for federal and state reporting.
4. Ensure that all general ledger accounts are reconciled to subsidiary records on a monthly basis.
5. Monitor and ensure that all receivables that have been outstanding for unusually long periods of time are received.
6. Review reconciliations to ensure that they are prepared properly and follow-up on any unusual items.
7. Prepare monthly closing general ledger entries.
8. Assist in the managing of spending against federal, local and donor restricted grants.
9. Execute transactions of tax deferred annuity plan/retirement deposits.
10. Verify payroll tax deposits are accurate and timely made.
11. Maintain good organized accounting files and records.
12. Assist departments in preparing budgets based on goals, current revenue, expenses and past performance.
13. Monitor and analyze financial information (e.g. revenues, expenditures and cash management) to ensure all operations are within budget.
14. Identify variances between actual and budgeted financial results at the end of each reporting period.
15. Maintaining communication with program managers as a way of ensuring uniform procedures, policies and systems.
16. Review spending requests for approval.
17. Maintain confidentiality of information at all times.
18. Attend all required individual and team supervision sessions/meetings.
19. Participate in all Parent Policy Council meetings and present financial statements to all Council members.
20. Participate in all required professional development opportunities.
21. Other duties as assigned.
Job Description – Staff Accountant 2
Qualifications:
1. Mission and culture alignment;
2. 3-5 years of experience, nonprofit accounting experience preferred;
3. Bachelor’s degree in accounting;
4. Knowledge of current audit and accounting concepts, including GAAP;
5. Strong knowledge of MS Office Excel, QuickBooks Online and financial management software (e.g. SalesForce,
Transaction Pro, Concur);
6. Excellent organizational and time management skills with excellent attention to detail, organizing data, producing reports and meeting deadlines;
7. Excellent client relationship and interpersonal skills;
8. Strong verbal and written communication skills;
9. Ability to prioritize and work independently in a fast-paced environment;
10. Ability to relate well to people of diverse backgrounds and experience levels;
11. Must have the ability to maintain a cooperative, diplomatic working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, and families;
12. Must demonstrate flexibility in work settings, maturity of judgment and ability to work collegially;
13. Must maintain training and professional development credits current;
14. Thorough understanding and working knowledge of client confidentiality;
15. Must have DC local and Federal criminal record clearance, Child Protective Register check status and substance abuse testing; and
16. Documentation of Tuberculin-free condition and health screening on an annual basis.
