The School Board of Bland County Public Schools invites applications and nominations for the position of Superintendent. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2022.
THE COUNTY
Bland County is located in southwestern Virginia. It is often referred to as “The Land Between Tunnels”, as a tunnel connects Bland County to Mercer County, West Virginia to the north and another tunnel connects Bland County to Wythe County, VA to the south. Bland County covers an area of 358 square miles, of which approximately thirty-two percent is designated to Jefferson National Forest. There are approximately 6,000 citizens divided into four electoral districts in Bland County: Seddon, Sharon, Rocky Gap and Mechanicsburg. Bland County is rich in history and wildlife and offers a picturesque view of mountains and farmlands.
THE SCHOOLS
Bland County Public Schools consists of Bland County High School located in Rocky Gap, VA, and Bland County Elementary School located in Bland, VA. Bland County High school serves grades 7 through 12, while Bland County Elementary serves Pre-K- grade 6. Approximately 700 students are enrolled in Pre-K – 12thgrade. Both schools are fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education. Bland County Public School currently employs approximately 110 employees and has a current operating budget of $9,716,554.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Board has established the following qualifications for the next superintendent of Bland County Public Schools:
Leadership and Management Skills: The successful candidate must be a decisive leader who provides motivation and inspiration to those under his or her leadership.
Personal Characteristics: The successful candidate must be an effective communicator who possesses the traits of a good listener along with trustworthiness, consistency, empathy, enthusiasm, and accessibility.
Board-Superintendent Relations: The successful candidate must be able to mediate and accommodate different perspectives, provide options and recommendations to the School Board, and understand differences between policy and administration and act accordingly.
Staff Relations: The successful candidate must create an atmosphere of shared trust and respect while welcoming and sustaining open communication with the school board, faculty, and staff.. He or she must foster staff development and manage staff equitably and effectively.
Community Relations: The successful candidate must advocate for the schools and communicate effectively on private and public levels. He or she must inspire community confidence through his or her consistent presence in the schools, at school activities, and in the community. He or she must value the opinions of parents, teachers, and other community members.
School Finance: The successful candidate must lobby for school funding on behalf of the school division and develop and explain the rationale for the budget, including both increased funding and cuts, to the Board and local officials, while offering creative funding options. He or she must evaluate wasteful practices on an annual basis and allocate those resources toward other areas of need.
Areas of Expertise: The successful candidate must possess expertise in curriculum and instruction, school reform (e.g., strategic planning, innovation, etc.), budget, and finance.
SALARY: commensurate with experience and qualifications
