JOB SUMMARY:
Provide special education students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Develops or modifies curricula and prepares lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels. Works in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
PASS (Positive Approach to Student Success)is a multilevel program that incorporates Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), research-based practices & interventions, with the goal to increase time in the mainstream settings where they have access to the general curriculum and interactions with peers.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
· Develop and implement plans for the curriculum program assigned and show written evidence of preparation as required
· Prepare lessons and adapt the curriculum for individual student differences
· Participate in ARD committee meetings; collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop an IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
· Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
· Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP
· Develop Data collection documents on IEPs and BIP goals and objectives.
· Work with and train general education teachers on implementing BIP and behavioral goals to generalize skills
· Prepare and employ Social Skills lessons
· Establish clear objectives for all lessons and communicate objectives to students
· Present the subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency (TEA), board policies and administrative regulations
· Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student groups involved
· Provide opportunities for students to participate actively and successfully
· Evaluate and provide feedback on student progress during instruction
· Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals, objectives and methods in accordance with district requirements
· Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for student teacher(s), educational assistant(s) and/or volunteer(s)
· Employ the use of technologies in the teaching/learning process
· Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study
· Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress and report cards as required
· Maintain appropriate assessment evaluation documentation
· Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and may volunteer to sponsor outside activities approved by the school
· Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of the school district
· Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students
· Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes in a regular school day
· Establish a discipline management plan, maintain order in the classroom and administer discipline in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations
· Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior
· Manage student behavior; consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP; intervene in crisis situations and physically restrain students as necessary according to IEP.
· Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aide(s).
· Collaborate with other faculty and administration to improve State assessment performance of all students on the campus.
· Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials and facilities
· Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement
· Assist in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials
· Provide as much as possible, a safe environment to protect students
· Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning instructional expectations and student progress
· Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community members
· Promote the school in a positive manner within the school and community
· Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly to colleagues, students, parents and community
· Participate in the district staff development program
· Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement
· Demonstrate human relations skills that are professional, ethical and responsible
· Keep informed of and comply with Federal, state, and district rules, regulations, and policies for special education teachers
· Compile, maintain and file accurately and correctly all reports, records and other documents required
· Administer standardized and other tests as required
· Attend and participate in faculty and/or special education meetings and serve on staff committees as required
· Obtain and maintain appropriate certifications in physical restraint
· Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas
· Perform other related duties as assigned.

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment: Work is located in a classroom environment; must have ability to move from one location to another throughout the district; regular exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION:
· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required
· Valid Texas teaching certificate, with required special education endorsements for subject/level assigned required
· Student teaching or approved internship is essential
· Highly qualified as defined by No Child Left Behind
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
· Ability to communicate (verbal and written).
· Ability to instruct and ability to maintain emotional control under stress
· Knowledge of assigned subjects, general knowledge of curriculum and instruction and good knowledge of child growth and development.
· Knowledge of special needs of students in the assigned area.
· Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation.
· General knowledge of curriculum and instruction. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
· Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior. Ability to be patient, flexible, and versatile. Basic technology competencies
