We, Core Services, build a platform for delivering the BBC’s digital content called WebCore. WebCore is a Serverless React framework which serves more than two billion requests a month for sites such as BBC Home, News and Sport. Our challenge is to provide a robust and secure service that can operate at increasing scale. We also enable BBC’s development teams to build innovative personalised experiences for BBC users.

Our Teams

Core Services supports every part of the developer lifecycle – creating, building, deploying, and owning. This provides diverse set of problem domains to master. We also operate the systems which serve millions of requests per day.

Our Platform engineers build and operate the underlying platform and infrastructure. This includes traffic management, presentation/web performance, serverless data aggregation and DevOps.

This role is for our DevX team. They are responsible for the platform’s build tooling, security, and monitoring.

Languages and Technologies we use

We use a range of tools and technologies including:

• AWS CDK Serverless Framework
• Lambda
• CodeBuild
• EC2
• S3
• IAM
• CloudWatch

We have systems which leverage Grafana, InfluxDB and Docker Containers. Plus, all of the code we write is Typescript!

Please don’t let that list put you off though! We choose the right tool for the job. We have an in-house training academy, and we take everyone’s suggestions onboard.

In addition to the above, we’re a fully remote team though, we try and meet up in person once a month in one of the BBC offices.

Main Responsibilities

• Collaborating with the team and to understand requirements and to design and operate the software.
• Pairing to write & test software to address our system non-functional & functional requirements.
• Writing & using monitoring systems to monitor the health of our systems.
• Using CI/CD & AWS technologies to implement operational & deployment infrastructure for our systems.
• Troubleshooting & diagnosing problems with our systems in production.
• Voluntary participation in out of hours support for our critical systems.

Essential

Desirable

• Familiarity with Amazon Web Services
• Infrastructure as Code experience
• An understanding of containers and their uses
• Some Typescript, a little JavaScript, and a wee bit of bash scripting

Delivery

• Delivering features using agile development practices
• Seeking out new tools and methodologies to evolve our development processes
• Solving operational issues, including working under a DevOps model
• Assisting with recruiting, mentoring, and training new team members
