BBC Hiring for Software Engineer – Bitesize Job at Glasgow, Scotland Full Time

As part of the Children’s & Education department this role is working across the Bitesize family of products, which consists of full stack development teams who build scalable back end services in Node with GraphQL and hosted on AWS, as well as responsive front ends in React.

Bitesize is the BBC’s flagship digital education service, with over 20 years of delivering quality curriculum-mapped education online.

Our mission is to help all Children in the UK to reach their full potential, learning every day in their own way.

We have massive impact – Bitesize has regularly reached over 2 million unique UK visitors during term time weeks. We rose to the challenge of home schooling during Covid-19 with Bitesize Daily, our biggest ever education push – and we’re experiencing year-on-year growth. However, we know that we can always do more for Children, Parents and Teachers.

This role provides the opportunity to work with a wide range of people, as designing and building children’s websites brings different and exciting challenges. So, it’s an exciting time to join the team as we’ve ambitious plans for Bitesize in the future – and are entering into a period of fresh expansion in the team.

Main Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer you will be expected to contribute the design and implementation of software applications, ensure delivery of robust, industry leading solutions.

Technical:

• Building full stack applications, using modern React, Node and cloud based architectures
• Building software that meets the requirements for a fast, reliable & always-on service.
• Seeking to always learn about new technologies or approaches, and championing them to ensure our products and processes are world class.

People:

• Working with others to get things done in a pro-active and positive way.
• Working closely with and understanding needs of the teams, enabling them to deliver high value to the audience.
• Working closely with our operations team to ensure the platform is well-supported, scalable and reliable.
• Contributing to an environment of engineering excellence and continuous improvement.

Delivery:

• Delivering features using agile development practices.
• Seeking out new tools and methodologies to evolve our development processes.
• Solving operational issues, including working under a DevOps model.
• Assisting with recruiting, mentoring and training new team members.

Are you the right candidate?

• Experience in web development, building full stack applications, using modern React, Node and cloud based architectures
• Experience of Continuous Integration
• Proven experience of Test Driven Development
• Experience of an agile environment, pairing and working within a collaborative team
• Experience delivering high quality software at scale
