The BBC is one of the UK’s most well-known and loved brands. The iPlayer product teams build some of the BBC’s most used and valued products. Our mission is to be the first place for anybody to go to watch BBC content. The iPlayer backend teams are responsible for creating and maintaining API’s and services at scale, to provide an up-to-date content catalogue and consistent experience across the iPlayer product and partner platforms.

The BBC Engineering community is a dynamic and supportive one, and there are frequent opportunities to collaborate with other teams. Our Engineers are all encouraged to do 10% time, every two weeks where they can work on personal learning and development. Engineers are also encouraged to participate in cross-department initiatives where individuals from different teams collaborate on shared problems such as Security, CI/CD or Documentation.

Are you the right candidate?

We’re keen to speak with people who have experience designing, developing, and supporting large, complex systems at scale with one or more modern programming languages and/or frameworks. We’d also be keen to see experience of cloud infrastructure and automated testing and deployment techniques. Finally, we value experience working in multi-disciplined teams and communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues at all levels of an organisation.

We use a variety of tools and technologies across our teams, and you are not expected to have experience with all of them. To give you an idea:

• We build services using TypeScript and JavaScript running on Node.JS, as well as database technologies such as Redis, Postgres and NoSQL
• We create and support reliable and scalable cloud-based systems on Amazon Web Services
• We use Git and GitHub for version control
• We use tools for enabling continuous integration and continuous deployment (Jenkins, AWS CodeBuild/CodePipeline)
