BBC Hiring for Junior Software Engineer (Java/React.js or Node.js) Job at Glasgow, Scotland Full Time

The Archive Delivery team in Glasgow is looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join them on attachment / fixed term contract for twelve months.

This role is within the Archive Delivery team, which is part of the Archives Technology and Services department within the Technology and Product Group.

What does all that mean?

The Archive Delivery team are responsible for enabling digital media content to get in, around, and out of the BBC and for it to be findable by others who need it. Archives Technology and Services manage the physical and digital archives, content delivery systems and storage, making the archives accessible and searchable to all and lastly the Technology and Product Group within the BBC use technology to create opportunities and empower creativity whilst designing, developing and delivering the BBC’s audience-facing digital products.

You will be joining a team of engineers who developed the BBC’s File-Based Delivery product, which gets media files from production companies into the broadcast chain and are developing a set of new REST API-based components to transform the way the BBC handles media in the future, linking-up a diverse range of content stores from across the organisation.

This year we have plans to work on many interesting challenges, some of which are:

• Building a first-of-its-kind hybrid cloud media storage and delivery architecture
• Building systems to allow the BBC to ingest and process Ultra High-Definition (UHD) content
• Expanding our graph database which maps several petabyte-scale archives
• Using our AWS cloud expertise to break away from expensive commercial on-prem storage systems

Main Responsibilities

In this role, typical responsibilities you can expect include:

• Develop backend micro-services mainly in Node.js, using your experience to guide the team when making design decisions
• Build web APIs and applications for use by other teams within the BBC and our suppliers, collaborating with others to understand their requirements
• Promote reliability, scalability, security, and performance throughout the team’s work
• Review and give feedback on others’ code, especially supporting the growth of our junior engineers
• Work with our testers to write appropriate tests at all levels of the development process and promote the use of automated test-driven techniques for ensuring code quality
• Effectively participate in the team’s agile software development methodologies, such as pair-programming, using Jira tickets and continuous delivery
• Embrace our DevOps culture, working closely with our dedicated operations teams to resolve and reduce production issues

• Interested in a Linux environment, modern Java/React.js or Node.js development of microservice-based architectures
• Keen to work within a modern, collaborative, multi-discipline, agile team able to speak up, share your ideas, challenge, agree and commit
• Keen to broaden and deepen your knowledge of modern cloud architectures and services
